Fez of Mahrez Posted 30 December 2006 Posted 30 December 2006 Welcome! A little opportunity for all you budding scribes out there. This thread is intended to be an ongoing chance for you to share your experiences following City in a way that will not be lost to the sands of time by threads slowly slipping off the radar. I shall be closing this topic in the same way that the Mandaric facts thread works as then we will just get the good stuff without having to trawl through a load of crap in between (primarily usually posted by myself, obviously). PM me your stories and match reports for games from years gone by for publication on the corresponding dates i.e. if you want to send in a report from a game from 14th January 1993, send it in and I'll post it up on 14th January. They can be anything you want as long as you write it yourself - accurate newspaper-style reports, little anecdotes about a game you particularly enjoyed for personal reasons or a bit of both. Please send them in a short time in advance (ideally 3 or 4 days before the corresponding date of the game) so I have time to read them and check them for spelling/grammar etc before they get posted. Any questions, please either start a thread in the User Help forum or PM me. The reports will start on New Year's Day so get out the old Fossils & Foxes, look up your favourite games from Januarys gone by and get writing.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 2 January 2007 Author Posted 2 January 2007 Opened. Bit of an ambitious ploy closing it and requesting reports. Going to throw it open for general reminiscing. January 2nd 1960 Chelsea 2 Leicester 2 (Leek 2) January 2nd 1965 Chelsea 4 Leicester 1 (Stringfellow) January 2nd 1971 Leicester 2 Notts County 0 (Brown, Partridge) FA Cup January 2nd 1978 Leicester 0 Manchester City 1 January 2nd 1982 Leicester 3 Southampton 1 (Young 2, Lineker) January 2nd 1984 Stoke 0 Leicester 1 (Smith) January 2nd 1988 Leicester 4 Crystal Palace 4 (Brien, McAllister pen, Reid, Wilkinson) January 2nd 1989 Ipswich 2 Leicester 0 January 2nd 1995 Ipswich 4 Leicester 1 (Roberts) January 2nd 1999 Leicester 4 Birmingham 2 (Sinclair, Ullathorne, Cottee, Guppy) FA Cup My book ends at 2000/1 season.
Brummie-FOX Posted 2 January 2007 Posted 2 January 2007 January 2nd 2006 (Not the longest memory) Crystal Palace 2-0 Leicester (McAnuff & A Johnson) Jobi McAnuff and Andrew Johnson scored late on as Crystal Palace secured their fourth successive league win. (Quite similar to yesterday ) Leicester boss Craig Levein:"Not many teams will come here and get a win this season. "But I thought that after Rab Douglas' penalty save the boys would get a lift. "But we lost a goal quickly and it proved to be the sucker punch."
Fez of Mahrez Posted 2 January 2007 Author Posted 2 January 2007 Thanks to Nationwider 5 January 1985, Baseball Ground, FA Cup Rd 3Burton Albion 1 Leicester City 6 My third ever City match, and my first away game. I was only eight, so my memories are a bit hazy, but the match does stick in the mind for several reasons... A Gary Lineker hat-trick! Woohoo! I saw Dame Gary score three! Alan Smith(2) and Steve Lynex scored the others. The tie was moved from Burton's ground to a bigger venue - I don't know if this is the only time this has happened to a City game? Harlow, Leatherhead cup ties? Does anyone recall another occasion? The Burton keeper was hit by a coin thrown from the City end - so it's not a recent phenomenon, then. The game had to be replayed as a result of the coin-hurling - again, is this the only instance of a City match being replayed for reasons other than a draw? The replay was behind closed doors and we won 1-0 with a Paul Ramsey goal. The only City game ever played behind closed doors? This was one of two times I went to the Baseball Ground. The only other time I went to the BBG (as Dennis Coath used to call it), I went with a relly to see Derby v the Arse - I've still never been to PP, so I've still yet to see a City-Derby Derby-derby. We were in the old Division One that year (now The Prem). It was a good year to get hooked on City as there were a lot of high scoring games. We beat Villa 5-0, Coventry 5-1, QPR and Sunderland (both 4-0), and Newcastle 4-1. Unfortunately, we suffered some high-scoring defeats that year too, including 5-0 (Sheff Wed), 4-1 (Arsenal and Watford), 4-3 (QPR) and 4-0 (Luton). We ended a respectable 15th out of 22. Everton ran away with the title that year. Our FA Cup run finished with defeat to Millwall in Rd 5. In all competitions that year, Gary Lineker scored 29 in 48 appearances! Will a City player ever score 29 in a season again in my lifetime???? Err, that's it.
Nationwider Posted 2 January 2007 Posted 2 January 2007 It's a day or two early, but why wait, eh? I think that Friday 5 January 2007 should be the Foxestalk Dame Gary Lineker Day.
Ultra Posted 3 January 2007 Posted 3 January 2007 The tie was moved from Burton's ground to a bigger venue - I don't know if this is the only time this has happened to a City game? Harlow, Leatherhead cup ties? Does anyone recall another occasion? The Leatherhead game was switched to Filbo. The Pompey home play-off game in 1993 was switched to Forest as our main stand was being rebuilt. And the Red Star Belgrade away game in 2000 was switched to Vienna, though this was for political purposes, not because Red Star's ground was too small The game had to be replayed as a result of the coin-hurling - again, is this the only instance of a City match being replayed for reasons other than a draw? The game was replayed largely at the insistence of a whingeing Burton manager - a certain Neil Warnock (yes, it was he). A few games have been replayed due to the weather forcing abandonments- most recent examples being Reading away in 2002-03 and Burnley away in 2004-05. There may have been cup ties replayed because players were ineligible, but I'm not sure about that (would have to check Of Fossils and FOXES for details)
Ultra Posted 3 January 2007 Posted 3 January 2007 # The replay was behind closed doors and we won 1-0 with a Paul Ramsey goal. The only City game ever played behind closed doors? Competitive game - yes, though the club arranges friendlies at Belvoir Drive on a regular basis, especially since scrapping the reserve team. We were in the old Division One that year (now The Prem). It was a good year to get hooked on City as there were a lot of high scoring games. We beat Villa 5-0, Coventry 5-1, QPR and Sunderland (both 4-0), and Newcastle 4-1. Everton ran away with the title that year. Our FA Cup run finished with defeat to Millwall in Rd 5. It was a decent season, with the football often a lot better than in the so-called Bloomfield glory era of the seventies. The only issue was the incessant hooliganism that afflicted a lot of our games that season both home and away - including this particular cup tie. In all competitions that year, Gary Lineker scored 29 in 48 appearances! Will a City player ever score 29 in a season again in my lifetime???? Well we live in hope. Elvis Hammond perhaps?

We still would have hammered them and thats probably why the replayed game was behind closed doors, so there was no monetary gain to either side. One of the best away days I've had for sure.............. ................................and the DLF got a kicking for their troubles A few newspaper cut-outs of the day http://www.geocities.com/thefringedlf/BurtonvLeicester.html
Fez of Mahrez Posted 4 January 2007 Author Posted 4 January 2007 January 8th 1972 Leicester 1 Liverpool 0 (Brown) January 6th 1980 Leicester 3 Norwich 0 (May, Weller, Henderson) FA Cup January 3rd 1983 Leicester 3 Chelsea 0 (Lineker 2, A Smith) January 3rd 1987 Leicester 6 Sheffield Wednesday 1 (Ramsey, Smith 2, Moran 3) January 6th 1990 Leicester 1 Barnsley 2 (Paris) FA Cup - I include this one as it is the first Leicester game I remember going to. I'm pretty sure I went to the Hull game on December 2nd 1989 (won 2-1, Paris & McAllister penalty) which is in all probability the first Leicester game I ever went to, but not 100% sure.) January 5th 1991 Millwall 2 Leicester 1 (James) FA Cup - I include this one as it is my first memory of being heartbroken by a Leicester defeat - and in a cruel fashion too. My Dad went to the game but didn't take me as it was Millwall away and I was only 6 and a half (worrabastard!) Anyway, he got back from the game, I excitedly asked him the score (no idea why I didn't listen to the radio or whatever but I clearly remember this event) and he cruelly said "Leicester won..." I cheered. "Millwall 2." Harsh. January 4th 1992 Leicester 1 Crystal Palace 0 (R Smith) FA Cup - clearly remember this game, Palace were an old First Division team so a mini-upset for old Second Division City. January 7th 1995 Leicester 2 Enfield 0 (Oldfield, Roberts) Remember this game too. Funny to think Oldfield and Roberts played in the same City team. Oldfield makes me think of early 90s and Roberts mid 90s, yet they actually played together for two seasons - 1993-95) January 3rd 1998 Leicester 4 Northampton 0 (Marshall, Parker penalty, Savage, Cottee) January 9th 2000 Arsenal 0 Leicester 0 FA Cup (One of the best goalkeeping displays I've ever seen from a City keeper. Pegguy! Pegguy! Pegguy!)
RowlattsFox Posted 4 January 2007 Posted 4 January 2007 January 9th 2000 Arsenal 0 Leicester 0 FA Cup (One of the best goalkeeping displays I've ever seen from a City keeper. Pegguy! Pegguy! Pegguy!) the only thing i remember from that game was darren eadie running length of pitch to make a goal-saving tackle, or something like that. t'was live on bbc.
