Leicester City chairman Jim McCahill plucked some money from nowhere to land Craig Levein's first signings - and he will do his best to come up with some cash again.

But the real bonus is that City are starting to find long-term stability.

And, while departures, on loan or permanent, will be needed to fund any new faces - as was the case with the double arrival of Alan Maybury and Mark De Vries from Hearts this week - City's latest move in the transfer market is very much a big step in the right direction.

Both players have signed for three years after the end of this season, something that tells its own story.

And McCahill said: "As anyone who is a fan of Leicester will have noticed, in the last three years we have had three different squads.

"We have got to stop that and, in line with Craig's thinking, we have to build, right from the Academy through the ranks, for the future.

"He wants to do it, building teams is what he is good at, he did it at Hearts - and that is exactly what we need here and now we have seen the start of that project."

How fast City go from here is bound up in how quickly they can reduce the current wage bill - and how much the Board can wheel and deal. But they have done pretty well so far with the £100,000 that funded the Hearts duo's transfer appearing from seemingly nowhere.

Paving the way for that funding were the loan moves last week of Nathan Blake to Leeds United for a month and of Trevor Benjamin to Northampton Town for the rest of the season.

McCahill explained: "The fact that a couple of players have gone out and (there are) potentially more to go out, we obviously stretched the budget a bit, perhaps (had) a look at encroaching on next year's budget a bit, a bit here and a bit there - all that has meant we could bring these players in.

"It does depend very much on other players going out. As the manager said, we have already spent the budget, before the season started, so anything else before we could get players out would be few and far between.

"Craig was aware that it was this case so it is no surprise to him. I am sure he is very pleased to have brought in two players of the calibre we have now seen.

"It is not lack of desire, just a case of trying to be very cautious and having to look after the business of the company because we don't want to get into the same situation as before."
