I've visited plenty of forums/messageboards and read utter rubbish about Sunderland.

Their fans act like they have a divine right to play in the Premiership. If you have a right to be there, whats went wrong with your last two stops there? All they have is a great stadium and a large fanbase, hardly any history.

But well done on this season, your going up. Just please, please make a fight of it this time.

My Second team... Keno's Mackem Army!

Sunderland do deserve to be in the Premiership - every other year.

They set records every time they get into the Premiership.

In their second to last spell, they set a lowest points record of 18 or 19 I think...

... in their last spell (last season) they set an even lower point record of 15.

Brilliant.

I want them to go back up just to see if they can smash their 15 point record, as well as records for most goals conceded (Swindon in 93/94) and fewest goals scored (might even be Sunderland - and it is... 21 goals in the 02/03 season).

If they go up, they will stay up i think.

I'm not so sure... Keno is looking like a great manager, specifically when it comes to man managment... but i wonder if they have the players to survive in the Prem, lots of their squad are world beaters at this level but in the top flight? ...I'm not so sure :dunno:

That's what the transfer market's for. Niall Quinn looks a lot more supportive with the cheque-book, too.

We should all hope and pray that Sunderland win the title.

Why?

Because if they win the Champo, and Hartlepool win League 2, I win £600.

That's why....

Keane has inherited a side that was in the Premier and then has had the chance to spend what he likes on the transfer market. He has done well in his short time but its not like he has had no help from his chairman!

As for Sunderland, they are a big club. They can get big attendances when things are going well, as proved by getting over 36,000 against Der**, an attendence which was only surpassed by Liverpool this weekend. They even got more than Spurs.

No club has a devine right to be in the Premier though but there fans must be quite happy since Niall Quinn came in, brought Keano as boss and they have signed some decent players. Hopefully we can get that devine right feeling at some stage over the next couple of seasons when we have a quality squad and MON back in charge!!!

To me, the fact they were in the Premiership means fcuk all.

They were absolutely bollocks in the Premiership, so it's not like their squad was Premiership class... I mean, they had shit like Andy Welsh on their books... lol

I have a feeling they'll go up. They're a good side who are tough to beat. Roy Keane seems to have a knack for finding good players who can perform for the club.

Remember at the start of the season when they were bottom and looking hopeless?

Under Niall Quinn though

Yeah I know but they still didn't look like they were ever going to put up enough of a fight for promotion. You have to take your hat off to Roy Keane there and Niall Quinn to be fair as he stepped down and appointed Keano.

When you lose your first 5 games, you have to sack yourself surely lol

And be honest, i'm sure everyone knew Keano would be a success.

I'd like to have seen how he would have done without the mass of cash.

It would have made his job a hell of a lot harder. You just have to look at the players he's brought in with cash to see that.

They've won a stack of league titles, plus a couple of FA Cups. Only ONE trophy in the last 70 years, mind..

It's incredible how many of their fans have stuck with them after their last two dire Premiership seasons.

But Keane is a proven winner who will take them up, if not this season than definitely next.

I dunno mate to me it means quite a bit. If a club gets promoted they spend a bit of money which Sunderland did and when they got relegated that meant there squad was of a decent quality. A good sound base. Add to that the parachute payment from the premier and the fact that a new chairman has come in and let Keano spend and the rest is history.

Im not suggesting its easy but its easier than if Keane went to Colchester or Barnsley and didnt have a base to work off.

They spent a grand total of less than 5m... and the quality of the players they bought was dubious at best, absolute crocks of shit at worst.

This says it all, really:

McCarthy claimed his hands were tied in the transfer market and the club had prepared for relegation before the season had even began - something Murray vehemently denied.

Sunderland signed 12 players last summer after winning promotion back to the Premiership - including two on loan - for a conservative £4.25m.

2.9m quid of those transfers were "Stead (£1.8m) [who has] has not scored at all and Gray (£1.1m) has managed only one." (this was as of March 6, 2006 - well into the 05/06 season).

They also spent 1.25m on their keeper, Davies. So that's all but 100k accounted for... three players from 10 purchases cost 4.15m and another 7 who were bought for less than 100k combined.

I can't really see much quality being brought in, in such numbers for such little cash.

lol Mick McCarthy spent the least of the three promoted sides that summer... West Ham spent around 4.8m and Wigan splashed close to 6m (probably because without a big name club or big name manager, you had to flash the cash for people to take you seriously). So his budget wasn't a million miles from those of his colleagues... but West Ham managed to get to the FA Cup final and finish 9th... They spent a little more money but on fewer players... Sunderland, it seems, must have gone for quantity instead...

They certainly didn't go for quality up front... lol^_^

Where it all went wrong for Mick McCarthy. ;)

Yes fair enough but they were strong enough for promotion in the first place, added a few faces (5m you say) and came down and didnt sell any big guns. They should in theory be able to be competitive this season and were amongst the favourites but Keano has come in and changed the squad around big time and his signings are working well, although he has the tools to do the job IMO!!

Shall we just call this one a draw??!! :D

Draw it is.

But still... you'd have thought that a squad that got promoted together and relegated together would be able to get off to a better start than 5 losses on the trot? Obviously Mr Quinn is about as motivational as a wet towel on a cold day. :dunno:

lol! Big Old Niall was a laughing stock as a player when he first burst on the scene and has followed suit as a manager. A quality businessman though whose decisions havent been clouded despite the scars of that 80s mullett that must give him nightmares???!
