davieG Posted 23 January 2005 Posted 23 January 2005 Looking towards next season I think the team that finished yesterday is halfway to a decent Championship Team I'm reasonably happy with the left and right and the strikers i.e. Maybury, Gillespie, Tiatto, Connolly and MDV although still not 100% convinced about Stewart I think he needs some competition - there is no cover for injuries although Canero might be able to cover for Maybury/Gillespie. But there are IMO big gaps in the centre. Walker/ANO Maybury ANO ANO Stewart(?) Gillespie Williams(?) ANO Tiatto Connolly MDV The Walker situation needs to be sorted, Taylor/Logan(?) We need two new centre backs A top notch holding midfielder. Heath and Stearman would be good cover in the short term for CB, but I can only see Stearman of those two making it longer term. Nalis would cover for Williams although I suspect he'll be off come the summer - Dawson would cover/vie for the holding role with a new player. As stated at the beginning I don't think we have any other options on the left or up front as I've given up on Morris. I think CL can say goodbye to a summer holiday as he's going to be a very busy chap.
Durnerz Posted 23 January 2005 Posted 23 January 2005 Gillingham made us look good I think yesterday, however as we won the game and did what we had to do without breaking a sweat, fair play. Regarding the team, a lot of the lads we have arnt good enough if we're looking to expand beyond the championship. Inconsistancy has been the main thing that has halted us I feel. Joey gudjonsson is a prime example of this, superb one game, average another, very poor the next. Centre back needs sorting, out of the 4 defenders we have (dublin, keown, dabizas, heath) they are all prone to errors, which is a worry. maybury im impressed with, stewart less so, I think mayburys outclassed him since he's been here, stewart will never be anything beyond championship level, he's simply not good enough. I think we can expect a gradual re-shuffle,i dont think levein will do a Micky adams and sign a whole new squad on free's who are in a similar vain to what we have now, he has more sense than that.

I'd agree with the rest of the squad though. If Canero ever comes into the frame again, he could play at RB and Maybury move to the left, that would be suitbale competition for Jordan. And as you said, we've got a weak central spine that needs sorting out. It doesn't matter how good the flanks are if the middle is poo. CL has already adressed the striker competition by (probably) signing O'Brien, but there's no doubt where he needs to focus come summer..

I hadn't forgotten Kisnorbo, have we actually signed him also by the same token of your argument about MDV how can you be sure Kisnorbo will deliver as a holding midfielder, I heard he was more of a CB who happens to be currently playing as a HM. My premise anyway was to give the benefit of doubt to any confirmed CL signings hence MDV - reasonably happy. As regards the weak central spine we obviously both agree, not that I think we're differing elsewhere really. By the way I thought O'Brian was a midfielder as in LIVINGSTON’S influential midfielder Burton O’Brien

And he's Livingstons topscorer too But it seems that CL's trend is to sign versatile players

As for MDV I think I saw enough in his general play to recognise that he can do the basics and a bit more what we don't know is whether he can apply it consistently with commitment only time will tell - time the CL has had so I'll trust his judgement. Re Burton I'll take five goals from a midfielder especially if the strikers are on form.
Who ate all the pies? Posted 23 January 2005 Posted 23 January 2005 It's just a shame it's only the making of a "half decent team" Still I'm sure he'll bring in a few more and get rid of some of the dead wood. I'll be surprised to see Morris about next season and I doubt Logan will be trusted with first team duty...remains to be seen though!
