Jordan Posted 1 April 2007 Posted 1 April 2007 I'm not sure, but I do know that on the whole they play much more entertaining, exciting and ambitious football than what Chelsea do. Chelsea: 31 games played, 72 points, 55 goals scored Arsenal: 30 games played, 55 points, 52 goals scored Wenger has a core of awesome young talent that could very well turn into a world-beating side in the near future, but somtimes sensible is better than "exciting."
lookwhaticando Posted 1 April 2007 Posted 1 April 2007 Arsenal's unbeaten run sounds glorious in those terms, but if you remember the games each time, they often found themselves riding their luck. Quite often they waited until about the 85th minute before getting themselves in the lead, or just as likely getting them back on level terms. Their record could easily have stopped much much sooner than 49 games - if only they hadn't been riding their luck as much as they had. It was a great achievement to be sure... but they were just as jammy as Chelsea seem to be at the minute - plenty of late goals, plenty of lucky decisions etc etc.

lookwhaticando Posted 1 April 2007 Posted 1 April 2007 Yeah, but they didn't play like Bolton 3-0 up whilst doing it. So they played with more style... but they were still jammy bastards - in more than just a few games, too.

I remember a late Reyes equaliser that shouldn't have stood or something like that, yeah. I remember especially towards the end as they were closing in on the record a few shaky draws/wins. But style's good. Flukey with style > Flukey without style.

I remember something like that - the goal should not have stood, but it did. Just one example. There's no doubting Flukey + Style is a greater spectacle... but it's still flukey, and that's the point. As good as they were, they rode their luck a lot - their 'unbeaten run' doesn't tell the whole story. Arsenal's record was good, but you can only but wonder if the whole thing would have gone wrong for them if just one favourable, flukey decision went against them.
