Ithink Stearman will be the most used youngster and i hope he is, he seems very good what ive seen of him.

I think we need to bring some youngsters through at some point in the season, like when were 4-0 up at Rotheram and situations like that.

When was that exactly?

WHEN WE'RE 4-0 UP, MEANING WHEN WE ARE 4-0 UP, NEXT SEASON.

Look if Stearman is good enough, then he's old enough. 17 is young, but if he's really talented and continues to impress then it will be hard to not give him a game and even Adams knows this. No other 16 year old's have been played in any of our pre-season games I don't think, so this again shows that Adams is atleast thinking about the possibility of this chap playing within the near future. We are all making assumptions that he might not be mentally ready or physically ready, but how do you ever find this out until you are thrown in at the deep end? Stearman has had nothing but praise all of last year and hasn't shown any signs of being unstable with each hurdle he passed (Under 17s, then under 19s, then reserves and England Youth, etc) I have no doubt that this lad could easily be our most exciting player since Gary Lineker.

Powell won't play

I think its sad Micky only mentioned players like Butcher, Powell & Dawson when he talks about youngsters. What about the likes of Dodds, Graham, Wesolowski, Petrescu? In my opinion they are better than the ones he mentions, other than Stearman ;)

Stearman will not play 15-20 games this season, despite how good he is, Micky aint that sort of manager.

Unfortunately, most managers don't know how to handle young players in the 'grown up' game.

They never seem to get the balance between under- and over-playing them right.

This why these lads either burn out before they're 25 (Lee Sharpe), or never seem to have the stamina later on (Joachim).

Before anyone has a go, I am fully aware that both have had problems with illness and/or injury.

I'm not sure that it's as bad as you say.

Look at some of the once young players that are now almost veterans in playing terms.

Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Butt, Hendrie, Alan Smith, Heskey, Owen, Dyer, Jenas, Joe Cole, Terry, Lampard

The list is endless.

Where the game has gone wrong though is as a result of the pressure applied to achieving success. Does a manager throw an obvious potential talent like Tommy Wright in at the deep end and see what happens, or does he hedge his bets and try and use him sparingly, hoping he takes his chances when more proven players at a level like Connolly and Dublin are not available.

It's a difficult choice. Every one wants to see youth come through, but not at the cost of relative success and the future of the youngster.

Another problem is inside the heads of the youngsters. Having the talent is only half of the game these days.

Take John Terry and Jody Morris. Both had great potential and both went out on the beer too much. One got his head straight, plays for one of the country's top clubs and represents his country whilst the other has just joined his third club in as many seasons and still gets himself into trouble on nights out.

All too often, it's not the managers not knowing how to manage the kids, it's the kids not knowing how to manage themselves.

I'm not saying that these youngsters don't deserve a chance in the team, i just think that there is more to it than meets the eye.

This is exactly what I've been saying for years.

The names you've mentioned have come from about 10 teams (haven't counted properly!), five (?) of which aren't Premiership at the moment. This is because there are few teams with a decent youth set up, and fewer clubs which are able to develop and bring these players on successfully.

I get fed up with endless debates about whether or not a teenager, who is showing promise, should be given an opportunity in the first team.

Each individual player has different attributes which may give him a better or worse chance than his equivalent from another side. My point was that quite often, the wrong decision is made. I didn't mean to come across pessimistically!

After all, this happens in other careers, not just in sport.

I agree as well that managing young players isn't just about bringing them on in terms of their football. Young players need some kind of life skills coaching too IMO.

Is it a really a surprise to see young lads going off the rails, when vast amounts of money are thrown at them, along with the girls, and the hangers-on trying to milk what they can from them?

How much support do these kids get from their clubs? I doubt it's very much at all!

The reason he probably didn't mention the others is because they are all 18 or under and that age doesn't lodge in Adams brain unless they are wonderkids (Stearman)

I've heard him talk about Petrescu and O'Grady at a Q & A session and he said they were both great talents but at 17 he couldn't judge whether they were ready yet. Last seasons reserve team outings proved O'Grady knew where the net is, and Tomi didn't seem to get any consistency in his game. If they perform in the reserves it will be hard for Adams not to take notice, so it's down to the player to keep banging on his door.
