RIP Ken Leek

From Western Road on Talking Balls.

"Ken Leek passed away today, very good inside forward or leading the attack had a decent goalscoring record for us in the late 50's, early 60's but will always be remembered for being left out of the 1961 Cup Final after scoring in every round previously."

I watched him many times. Effective footballer in days when City had a team to be proud of and played some football to match.

Fans thought it a scandal that he was left out of the final side but in truth I cannot remember much about it, being only 12 at the time.

My Grandad tells me the story of Leek being left out the Team for Cup Final.. Maybe its the way he tells it but yeah... Scandal is a word that should be used..

I honestly can't remember whether i saw him play or not, if he left in 1961 after being dropped from that Cup Final team, probalby not.

It's a shame that he's remembered for that, the word is we could well have won if he'd been playing and if we hadn't been reduced to 10 men. His goal scoring record is pretty good 34 from 93 appearance all in the top League and 9 from 17 in the FA Cup.

One every 2.5 games or so, at a time when players normally played a full 90 minutes on heavy grounds with heavy footballs.

Everyone connected with Leicester City would like to pass on their sincere condolences to the family and friends of former player Ken Leek, who sadly died this morning, aged 72.

Leek, a fine, skilful centre forward, made his City debut on August 23, 1958 and scored once in his side's 2-0 victory over Everton.

Initially joining City in the top flight as an inside or outside-left, Leek was soon vying with Derek Hines for the spearhead role, winning the first half-dozen of his eventual 17 full Welsh caps, and accelerating his chance-taking ratio - to the point where he had scored in every round of the 1961 FA Cup before Matt Gillies controversially left him out of the Wembley line-up.

After 108 appearances and 43 goals for the Foxes, Leek moved to Birmingham soon afterwards and in 1963 became a key member of their League Cup winning side, scoring a brace in the final against Aston Villa. Later in life, Leek settled in the Daventry area, working for Ford Motors before retiring in 1995.

i remember this ( i think hugh mcillmoyle took his place ) but i never found out what happened or why he was so controversially left out , as footballers lives were a lot less public then we sort of made our own conspiracy theories up.

anyone know what really happened ?
