books part 2?

not sure if there was a previous book thread somewhere.

Bought a book today from Smiths. Dead Famous by Ben Elton. He may not be the most popular person on here with him being a leftie but I think he wries good witty satirical humour. Lets not forget he did some of the Blackadder series. Anyway the book was only 2.99 and it is a spoof on Big Brother. TBH I was torn between buying because of Ben Elton or not to buy it because I am not a fan of Big Brother. Basically its all the usual characters in the house and somebody is murdered and its up to a police inspector who hates the program to go through 30+ days of video tape to search for clues leading to the killer.

The book is a bit confusing to start with. It switches from different days as the police reviews diffent tapes. In the house there is the out of work actor, the racist, the lesbian, the conservationlist (who they dragged from an ubderground living quarters and told there was need to shower) and others who love themselves. The inspector says that he could happily kill any of them. The seargent assisting is an avid fan of the program. A WPC is a closet lesbian and the under producer of the program hates the producer.

In one part an inmate says in the 'confession box' how she loves all the fellow inmates in the house but there may be moments when she could hate them. The program was edited for the viewers to ' I hate them all'.

i'm sure i don't know.

incidentally, i'm reading 'the grey man' by andy mcnab, i'm hoping there is a massive twista the end, or it's horribly clear to see what's going to happen to the 'hero'

I've read that book Nightguard. Not a bad read, harmless satire, quite entertaining, very readable.

I'm currently reading this (although I've been sidetracked a few times with other books):

Fascinating.

Don't watch it.

The blurb on the back cover of the book got me interested.

Quote

One house. Ten contestants. Thirty cameras. Forty Microphones.

Yet again the public gorges its voyeuristic appertite as another group of unknown and unremarkable people submit themselves to the brutal exposure of the televised real-life soap opera, House Arrest.

Everybody knows the rules; total strangers are forced to live together while the rest of the country watches them do it. Who will crack first? Who will have sex with whom? Who will the public love and who will they hate? All the usual questions. And then suddenly, there are some new ones.

Who is the murderer? Howe didhe or she manage to kill under the constant gaze of thirty television cameras?

Why did they do it? And who will be next?

Another case for Chandler methinks.

When I did writing classes I was told one of the first rules is to write what you know about. Ben Elton has had a lot of experience with TV and the way it is run so his cybicism comes across in his writing.

It is obvious it is based on BB but if he is knocking it he must have watched quite a bit of it to do the research so is he for BB or against it?

Whats the BB hijacker anyway?

Doubt the book is a bestseller as its reduced by £8. But then again the best sellers are probably by ex celebrities trying to rekindle their fame. The better books are low in the charts so I may have a bargain after all, Even Terry Pratcetts latest in hardback is half price.

Different Celeb's take the role of Big Brother, I only watched the opening show where it was Matt Lucas, Best to ask LFF i think his Mrs makes him watch it against his will.
