We were worse off when Porter went off for Dickov - FACT. He may be biased towards him, but the facts don't lie. I was hoping this Dickov move was a one off last week so thats the only thing really bugging me.

He proved more than able in the Championship and this was his first start in a year.

But what does that tell you? That Porter is a better winger than an ageing striker? Hardly the benchmark is it? He was'nt that good today. Dyers two performances in the other 2 leagye games have been far better. Granted, Porter has been injured. But he didnt beat his man once today.

Porter's not noted for trying to beat people as such. He passes and moves past people. Nor do I think he'd have been encouraged to risk much dribbling past people today because losing the ball could well have left Dyer exposed.

So assuming that we had a genuine left back playing today instead of Dyer and Porter put in that performance, would you be defending him as much?

Unfortunately it would appear that Porter is getting all the attention for the wrong reasons.

He was far from effective at times today but he showed glimpses of what could be. I'm really sorry Thrach but I don't take notes at the game as you do but I thought that he was off the boil.

I was looking for the guy who performed so well pre season and he didn't turn up.

All this "we didn't concede till he went off" bollocks holds no water with me, you can use stats like that to argue your case either way.

We won. There were bits that were good, there were bits that were bad. We move on.

All of these players will get a chance to prove their worth over the course of the season. Porter missed an opportunity to catch the eye today but he was far from alone.

Notwithstanding that we need to improve all over the park, I'm contented at the moment three games into the league campaign.

He had several decent moments particularly in the first half and was forever available to make Dyer's job easier. Perhaps the biggest compliment to Porter was how shit we played when he went off.

I'd like to see your notes of his several decent moments. I'm as much of a fan of Porter as anyone but he was clearly below his best today. He gave it away cheaply, lost control of the ball on three or four occasions when in one-on-one situations and his one shooting chance hit the side-netting when going across goal or pulling the ball back was a better option.

I'd say we played shit when Gradel went off but that was more to do with having the cushion of the two goals and sitting back far too much. Losing Porter from the side really didn't affect us that much, it was the change in tactics that did that. In fact, we were doing perfectly well until the filthy urchin in front of me dropped his 'meat' pie and splattered gravy all over the floor.

I do sympathise about the meat pie. :D

I'd not contest that his edge was missing. It's what you get when you leave players on the sidelines too long and I tried to reflect that in the average mark I gave him.

But the not-conceding point has nothing to do with quoting statistics. We played noticeably worse when Gradel and Porter went off although neither was on top form.

People talk about Dyer being the better option but we played Dyer at Stockport and didn't score at all despite being more dominant in general than we were on Saturday. Dyer in fact mised a golden chance up there and had Porter done the same he'd have been lambasted instead of mildly criticised.

Furthermore our left flank looked considerably more vulnerable than it did against Tranmere. Yes Tunchev did okay but he never looked comfortable.

Porter took the initiative with his shot into the side-netting. Had he scored he'd have been a hero. It's easy to say afterwards what he should or shouldn't have done but he was close to a goal from a good move - far closer than Dyer with his much easier chance the week previously.

There wasn't that much of a time gap between when Gradel and Porter went off so why our loss of momentum should be down to one rather than the other I don't know. But our sitting back had much to do with our inability to retain possession as well as previously and, in that department, I'd always put Porter ahead of Dickov.

However, the lad was tiring so Pearson had a predicament and luckily we got away with what was a questionable solution.
