Just out of curiosity what's wrong with living too near Brick Lane?

well, obviously it's horses for courses, but personally, i found brick lane to be one of those places that are much better to visit rather than to live near, it is FULL of tourists and really skanky indian restaurants (the better ones are elsewhere around tower hamlets), also it is very close to the city, so at weekends it is the markets (spitalfields is the best) and nothing else, so you end up having to go to hoxton or islington or up town for entertainment... i mean there is stuff there and it's not really scummy like whitechapel, but you'll pay more to live there cause it's brick lane...

as i said i lived just between shoreditch and dalston, just round the corner but much cheaper and you don't get accosted by on street curry-sellers.

hope this helps...

edit:

JTB just saw your suspiscious look... as i said above, i lived in whitechapel and it was the most depressing dump i have ever lived in, just really horrible all the way up to bethnal green road - that what i thought, anyway - of course, there are some nice bits, like columbia road, i guess that's the thing with london, everywhere has it high points and absolute lows...

Fair enough maybe don't actually live ON Brick Lane but the areas around it are alright. And there's some excellent bars, cafes and clubs on Brick Lane itself. As you say it's horses for courses but I actually quite liked Whitechapel. Had a good buzz about it with the market, old pubs and decent new bars.

Good call on Dalston. I lived at Dalston Junction (so probably a bit further north than you were) for awhile and it is cheap. Shitloads of buses so you don't really miss the tube either.

yep, kingsland crescent  - expect it to get super pricey on the islington side of the road when they finish the tube extention... and not only are there loads of buses but the one up to oxford street is one of the best urban bus routes in the world: bishopsgate, threadneedle street, mansion house, st pauls, holborn - great stuff...

and liverpool street is, what, 5 mins on the bus?

and also, you can get a bus to st pancras from dlaston junction to...

and it has the best cinema in london...

Don't forget the plethora of fantastic Turkish restaurants between Dalston and Stoke Newington as well.

To an outsider it looks pretty rough, and fair enough it's not the NICEST place but it does have a lot going for it.
