James. Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 Right then. I own the Cambridge Audio 540A amplifier. I bought it from Richer Sounds, it's a quality amp. However due to me not doing my research I got lead to believe that a pair of Gale speakers would compliment this amp very well. I didn't realise that Gale is a Richer Sounds brand and as such the salespeople are encouraged to shift their own stuff. Now as I say I'm happy with the amp (and aware that Cambridge Audio is also exclusive to Richer Sounds) but I've been left disappointed by the speakers. I know they need a good 36 hours or so of play to "break them in" but 1 year later and I'm still not entirely impressed. I want a new pair. They will mainly be playing electronic music so I want a crisp sound with good bass. Anyone got any recommendations?

B&W DM602 S3 or something - they were about £300, but I've been very happy with them and I could easily end up keeping them for 15 years plus, like I did with my old Missions
hairy Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 I have these Sub and these Tweekers connected to my Sonos system and they sound great. I will now always buy subs and tweekers to ensure I get the complete range.

B&W DM602 S3 or something - they were about £300, but I've been very happy with them and I could easily end up keeping them for 15 years plus, like I did with my old Missions that's the fellers, but i'm sure i paid quite a bit less than that, if you go to independent retailers they will give you a better price, for sure... nice tho, aren't they? i have to have the sponge bits in the bass cones, as i have them on the floor and live above people, but they are still meaty... and nice looking....

I think they gave me a deal on the stands or something, but I don't like to drive too hard a bargain in there because they've always looked after me and sometimes I worry about how the business is going. They chucked some freebies in when I bought new separates from them a few months later. I've got thick carpet and had the walls partially soundproofed, so even though I'm in a terraced house the noise doesn't travel very far so I can go reasonably loud without upsetting anybody, and they're not bass monsters anyway, are they, even though they are, like you say, 'meaty'.
Jay Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 You missed the important detail out JTB!!! Money!! what's your price range? I believe these are ment to be what some might call... the bo11ocks when it comes to speakers they are about £380.00 though mezzo 2 they were also reviewed on the Gadget show
Fez of Mahrez Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 I've never bothered with proper speakers, can't play my music too loud anyway. Just bought a couple of little 20W Sony ones with a subwoofer though - £30 reduced from £45. Music sounds a million times better already.

When we get our flat we can invest in some sexy speakers for our TV/Music home entertainment system. Job done.

James. Posted 28 August 2008 Author Posted 28 August 2008 Amen brother. When are you moving to London, where are you going to live and when can I come round?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 28 August 2008 Posted 28 August 2008 When are you moving to London, where are you going to live and when can I come round? Next summer I want to live north of the river and Alex wants to live south of the river so I imagine, knowing our levels of intelligence, we will come to a compromise and attempt somehow to live either on or even in the river. You can come round whenever you like, as long as you bring your breathing apparatus.

You can come round whenever you like, as long as you bring your breathing apparatus. Perfect. I can take you to lots of pretentious nights in Old Street where everyone looks like Russel Brand and dances to minimal electro fidget core. It'll be shit, in a post modern ironic way. In all seriousness north of the river I would recommend the areas around Brick Lane, Shoreditch, Angel, Bethnal Green. And south of the river Surrey Quays (where I am) is chilled out and then there's Tower Bridge, Bermondsey, London Bridge, Greenwich, etc. Clapham is popular but generally only if you're a fan of chain bars and slappers.

A couple of my mates live in Angel, couple more in Bow (****ing Cockneys). It's all about the north. All the stabbings are in the south. What did you make of those Raw Man tracks?

Hold on, I have no plans tonight so I'll give them a crack later. I got hold of Booka Shade - Movements and Digitalism - Idealism the other day. Expecting big things from these albums, will be listening to them on my way to Leicester tomorrow night. Oh, and Waldeck - The Night Garden. Not convinced it's the same Waldeck as the one on your mix but it IS a quality album - cross between Portishead and Massive Attack. Can't go wrong with that.

Forgot to reply. Booka Shade album is okay. No great shakes in my humble opinion, couple of decent tracks. I really, really like the Digitalism album though. Getting into loads of this kind of stuff at the moment, mostly albums I should have already downloaded (Justice, Isolée, Teenage Bad Girl etc)

Highly rated it would seem after a quick look in Wikipedia.
The People's Hero Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 Can I also move in to this flat. South of the river please.

I want to be able to get to Covent Gardne (or Holborn/Leicester Square so I can walk there) with minimal fuss. South was best because there's a direct train from Waterloo to Hook (where the office I'm currently working in is) so if I needed to come here then it'd be easier. I doubt I would do that often though, so North of the river would be fine really. Shoreditch and Brick Lane are both in walking distance of Liverpool Street Station which could get me to Holborn, and Bethnal Green can obviously get me there too. Angel's not so good though

I know there's a bus that will take you from Angel to Covent Garden in about 30 minutes. Bethnal Green will be cheaper though. I actually quite like it round there. Whereas some people say it's rough and dodgy for me it just has character, like much of East London. In terms of the north Camden could be a good call as well, now that IS a bit rough but it's a very good place to go out and the market is quality. Another stop further north takes you to Kentish Town which is decent as well and handy for getting to Leicester Square.

James. Posted 29 August 2008 Author Posted 29 August 2008 Even during rush hour? Actually just checked and I was wrong. The best way from Angel to Covent Garden would be 2 tubes, but it would be VERY quick, less than 20 minutes. If I were you I'd look at Camden and Kentish Town in the north or Bethnal Green and Shoreditch in the east.

Angel's not so good though don't live too near brick lane, for god's sake, you will regret it. if you go east, avoid anywhere south of bethnal green and bow, but be prepared to find anything too close to stratford as it is getting olympic pricey - i used to live just south of dalston, which was actually really handy, despite not being that near the tube, there are many many buses down kingsland road, and its pretty close to islington and easy to get to nice places like farringdon, and the west end, and it is super cheap cause no one knows it is there, and there is a chip shop which is wicked and used to count sade amongst its customers and some of the finest kebab shops i have ever visited... oh and if you have to get to waterloo - four words 'waterloo and city line' (unless they've closed it down )
