CITY LODGE A PROTEST VOTE

10:30 - 20 April 2005

Lincoln City's promotion-chasers have delivered a sensational snub to the annual Professional Footballers' Association's divisional awards.

Fed up Imps stars have made a mockery of the League Two team of the season selection process by voting for a side consisting of ex-City players currently playing in the division.

Lincoln's squad were unhappy at the prospect of being ignored by their fellow professionals for the third successive year and decided to ridicule the whole affair.

Every professional footballer is asked by the PFA to pick the best player in each position in their respective divisions.

No City player has been selected by their fellow pros to represent League Two this season - despite Keith Alexander's men requiring just a point at Northampton on Saturday to reach the promotion play-offs for the third year in a row.

So, in a humorous swipe at their lack of past recognition, City's players concocted a team of 10 ex-Imps, including the likes of former favourites Mark Bailey, Lee Thorpe, Gavin Gordon and John Finnigan.

The only position they could not fill was the goalkeeper's spot - so that went to John Ruddy of bottom club Cambridge who have conceded 62 goals this season.

"For two seasons now we have made the play-offs and not one of the lads has made the best 11," said City striker Simon Yeo, the club's PFA representative.

"It's unbelievable because there are players at this club who have been excellent.

"So this season we thought we would just vote for former Lincoln players who are in our division.

"It was just a bit of a joke and was our way of poking fun at the selection process. We really should have at least one player in the side, there is no question about it."

A number of City players are expected to be at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on Sunday when the League Two side will be announced at the annual PFA awards dinner.

Highlight of the night will be the presentation of the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, with Chelsea's midfield ace Frank Lampard and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney expected to pick up the silverware.

City boss Alexander agreed with 23-goal Yeo, who stressed Lincoln's players had voted sensibly for the main honours, suggesting the snub is due to the misconception that Lincoln are a long-ball side.

"It's a disgrace," ranted Alexander. "I've heard the team of the season and some of the names are laughable.

"We don't have any players in it because people accuse us of being a long-ball side. That's rubbish.

"The best way we can stick two fingers up to the rest of the league is by winning automatic promotion."
