ozleicester Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 (i assume this is the same as the "working with children" checks we do here in OZ) cue the "if they've done nothing wrong they've got nothing to fear" brigade. What about civil liberties here, are we going to ask for a CRB for everyone who ever comes in contact with kids...mum, dad, uncle, aunt, TV presenter, bus driver, etc etc.. I am sure the largest proportion of child abuse is by someone who is known to the child/ a family member this isnt about protecting kids...it is just placating the legal fraternity and protecting our governments from being sued
davieG Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 Are these test just over kill, what do they prove? If you've not done anything or been found out you wont be on the list and if some one has been proved to have a questionable character surely they would be on the sex offenders list, wouldn't it be simpler to just ensure that this list is vigorously maintained and that all convicted child molesters stay on it for the rest of their lives.

Exactly, if you've never been caught, you won't be on the list. I think there are difficulties in maintaining the SOR, as offenders don't always let the authorities know that they have moved. There is an online list of the most wanted. I don't know if it's been useful.

Surely it would be better to focus the resources on one system and make sure that works, for all the time and effort spent on the CRB they could probably pay to have the registered child molester monitored regularly. If they can make football supporters report to a police station every Saturday I'm sure they could manage a similar system for child molesters.

Why not just educate children on the "stranger danger" thing, and if you still don't trust your kids with strangers, make sure that you, or someone that you do trust, supervise your children at all times? Or is that too simple?

Id assume its been tightened up since then... then again maybe not
davieG Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 That was some time ago... Id assume its been tightened up since then... then again maybe not I think the problem with this guy was he'd only been investigated previously and not charged with anything so I guess no scheme would cover that situation.
