FilboFox Posted 19 November 2009 Posted 19 November 2009 It's a nothing job... yes the person will be President of the EU, but in terms of actual powers he or she will have, they'll be pretty damn restricted.

Maybe to start with but these people don't get where they are without knowing how to empire build.

The Belgian PM is not going to make anything of the job... he's a very quiet figure... I lived there for 15 years and my parents still live over there yet he's not even that well known amongst the Belgian people for having done anything. He wasn't even voted in during an election as there was a massive political mess over there not that long ago, he had to be asked and then persuaded by the King to take office... hardly the assertive figure that sounds like he's going to take the bull by the horns.
Guest Bilo Posted 19 November 2009 Posted 19 November 2009 Bliar is lucky he never stood in front of a War Crimes Tribunal so can't complain too much about not getting this gig.

Sounds ripe for manipulation for those that like to do their dirty work behind the scenes, probably why he got the vote.

breadandcheese Posted 20 November 2009 Posted 20 November 2009 I know it's nice to have a British person as High Representative for Foreign Affairs, but Baroness Ashton. I'd love to know how she is qualified for such a role, bearing in mind she has never been elected for any position by the electorate and has never worked in international relations before. I find it to be somewhat sinister that deals are done behind closed doors with appointments of such grand positions decided by committee.
