The Padster Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 I have been invited to join a group on Facebook regarding the safety of the canal in light of the Phil Dillon tragedy. After going through some of the comments on there I can't help but wonder what planet some of these people are on. I mean, to say drain the canal, is downright stupidity whilst somebody else has said to erect a fence or bars all along the towpath which I believe to be, again, a silly idea. I am really just wondering what you guys thoughts are on how to improve safety by the canal, obviously better (any!) lighting or maybe CCTV along the city centre/urban strech is a basic but how far should we go with this. Might be better raising awareness of the dangers of drinking far too much.
Guest Bilo Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 As tragic as this incident undoubtedly is, anything other than extra lighting and some life-rings along the paths is just ridiculous and unworkable. The Grand Union Canal stretches some 137 miles, so fences are out. Draining the canal is one of the silliest things I've ever heard (and I sat next to a bloke at Plymouth who was adamant we were going to be relegated) so lighting in areas that see a lot of foot traffic is the only realistic and viable option. That and raising awareness of canal safety obviously, a lot of these incidents could be prevented by education and a bit of common sense. I think SF probably has a point too. It's a tragic thing to happen and I extend my condolences to Phil Dillon's family, but his passing shouldn't be the excuse for stupid ideas to crawl out of the woodwork.
Daggers Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 They should concrete the canal in and build more student accommodation.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 What happened is an absolute tragedy and I'm sure people are trying to do something positive, but isn't this all a bit mental? If he'd fallen over and hit his head, would we be trying to ban hard surfaces? If people want to make the world a safer place they should join Brake! or something
Guest Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 If he'd fallen over and hit his head, would we be trying to ban hard surfaces? Too bloody right. Stupid hard surfaces.
coale39 Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 Maybe put a springy net the length of the canel and any drunk students that fall in spring back out again.
Nick Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 Too bloody right. Stupid hard surfaces. I was down by the canal the other day and there appeared to be some cable on the towpath. If I hadn't of used my eyes and noticed it, anything could of happened........... *Goes *
Fosse Boy Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 I take it the poor bloke fell in, but what actually happened? Did he trip on something?
Nick Posted 22 March 2010 Posted 22 March 2010 I take it the poor bloke fell in, but what actually happened? Did he trip on something? I'm not sure anybody knows what happened to the poor fella who fell in - my post was not in reference to him.
Sir Fynwy Posted 23 March 2010 Posted 23 March 2010 I take it the poor bloke fell in, but what actually happened? Did he trip on something? I don't think anyone actually knows how he fell in but the CCTV film of him leaving a city bar almost unable to walk may lead you to draw some conclusions.
lou Posted 23 March 2010 Posted 23 March 2010 Very sad but like others have pointed out its not the canal thats dangerous its staggering home pissed in the early hours along a canal path that is. There wouldnt have been anyone else around at the time so any amount of life belts and lightiing wouldnt have saved him. Tragic but totally avoidable
