Webbo Posted 8 May 2010 Posted 8 May 2010 I would have thought top six was possible at the start of the year if Pearson spent/loaned well - looking at teams like Bristol City and Swansea, momentum from promotion clearly lends well. I am an optimist and I was fairly cheery about our prospects this year but I still only figured about 10th. I don't think anyone - even you or the other more hopeful optimists - would have actually, honestly, seriously listed Leicester in your likely top six if you were a professional - it would have been a somewhat daft call in any normal season but in a year in which the relegated teams included such stalwarts as Newcastle and Boro? Heh. No chance. Even at the start of the season I thought it was possible (but not certain) and I couldn't understand why people thought that we'd struggle. I never did rate Boro's chances.
Finnegan Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Yes, "possible" and you didn't think we'd "struggle." That doesn't mean that a journalist is clueless for not fancying our chances of two back to back promotions which is all I'm saying here as a couple of people seem to want to attack Claridge for, frankly, just being honest. There are City fans on here that seem to take it immensely personally any time someone they think should only ever rant and rave about City says anything they perceive to be defamatory. The bottom line is, we aren't favourites, shouldn't be favourites and there was nothing wrong with Claridge saying so. To deviate back to your point, it was "possible" at the start of the year that Tottenham would qualify for the Champions League - but would Hansen, Lineker and co have been awful pundits if they'd not predicted them in their likely top four at the end of the season? A fair comparison, I feel.
Webbo Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 I'm not disagreeing with you Finners, I couldn't care less what Claridge thinks. When I said wtf does he know I was just giving my opinion on him and most pundits. I don't kid myself that he's a fan of ours or that he owes some sort of loyalty. In the main I was just being smug with everyone on here who said earlier in the season that I was being unrealistic saying we could make the playoffs.
