Bettsj2 Posted 2 June 2010 Posted 2 June 2010 You have got to be kidding surely? He was our top scorer and he missed the best part of 3 months, I agree with Bruno he has probably got 2 years left in him at a push so a long term replacement would be welcome in the next two seasons. We need to invest money into the right back position and another striker. The midfield is pretty good but another CM would do nicely due to Oakley losing his ability to run. I find it incredible that there are still some people who doubt Fryatt. He will score goals again next year and I imagine he'll still be questioned if he misses a chance. As for strengthening, I think Vaughan would be a great addition for the season. On top of this, i'd like to see if we could get Cleverley on loan again so we could actually have a right winger. On top of this, a loan for Jay Spearing would be welcome and 2 full backs. Apart from that, I think we have players like Gallagher, Kermorgant, N'Guessen, Adams who have shown glimpses of what they can do but havent found consistancy. And before anyone moans about Yann, in all the games he's played (Derby away aside), he's linked up play well, showed good control, been great in the air and against Middlesborough showed that he can score. Given Howard will be another year older, Yann could play a big part next year. So with Yann and the other players mentioned above and the additions mentioned, I think we have a real chance. Our transfer strategy is hinging at the moment on this Polish guy sniffing around, and also the likelyhood that Milan could be facing some rather hefty charges. If HM Revenue didnt have a case, I dont think they would have pursued this to such an extent.

I find it incredible on the basis of 1 complete season and 2 incomplete seasons Fryatt is hailed as some kind of wonder striker. The lad has talent but while he was away getting his jaw rewired I felt we were a much better team than with him in it. He is still very immature in a lot of decision making, his potential would be realised if we found a big mobile forward to play alongside him. He owuld also benefit from having decent support from outwide so he wouldn't have to go off in to the channels. Apart from that, I think we have players like Gallagher, Kermorgant, N'Guessen, Adams who have shown glimpses of what they can do but havent found consistancy. I fully concur that Gallagher (infact Gallagher should have been mentioned in my initial post) and Kermorgant could be worthwhile, although I think the latter will find it very tough to win over sections of the support now. N'Guessan and Adams are not serious contenders for me and I wouldn't be suprised to see them go the way of Gradel and Wesolowski. For us to move on we need a better calibre of player than those 2. I think we will be able to utilise the loan market to full advantage again, clearly Pearson is well respected by Premiership bosses and I would imagine 3 or 4 significant loan deals before August is out.

I agree that we looked a better team after Fryatt was injured. This was mainly due to the other players in the team taking responsibility for themselves rather than looking for Fryatt all the time. Dont get me wrong, i'm not saying Fryatt is anywhere near the finished article, but few strikers hit their real peak until they are mid to late 20's which Fryatt is a couple of years off. With regards to N'guessen, given the fact that he scored the goals he did without ever really featuring consistantly in the starting line up, gives cause to think that his development will show more prominance next year. Adams has a lot of talent and I feel he could be a success at this level, it's just finding a role that suits him. I dont think as an out and out winger he is particularly worthwhile, but in a couple of formations we played this season he would have fitted well, for example, at the front of diamond formation midfield just behind the strikers or as part of a 3 man attack as a supporting striker.

Fryatt spent a lot of time doing what Iain Hume used to do, get in to decent positions and either ignore his team mates or delay the pass and attacks would breakdown. Again I think you are putting too much credit on his shoulders, it appears you are suggesting the team rely on him, but acknowledge that we were better without him. Again he would be spared this if we had any decent players out wide who can take away the need for him running the channels.

I acknowledge that the team played better once he was gone as they no longer had the option to rely on him. The nature of a striker is to be greedy when in or anywhere near the box, most strikers will almost always look to score for themselves that isn't a trait exclusive to Fryatt. It works both ways as sometimes a striker will try to do the selfless thing, the chance will be gone and people will acuse the said striker of 'bottling' it. We wont be the first two people to have differing opinions on Fryatt and I suppose only time will tell. One thing that is for sure is you are completely correct regarding the wingers. Overall we've played a very narrow game this season and if we are to push on next season, we either need the wingers already here to start playing like wingers, or to bring in the personnel to give us that option.
maddog Posted 2 June 2010 Posted 2 June 2010 Our midfield remains the key issue as it has been for a few seasons now. They're solid and decent defensively, but lack pace and don't have that spark to charge forward and create easy chances for the strikers. A lot of Fryatts goals are created by Fryatt. Our midfield seems incapable to play those killer passes. And other than King there is a lack of goals. There is also a lack of width in midfield which is down to Pearsons tactics. We had one of those players briefly in Mark Davies, Spearing showed positive signs but he's not ours either. We don't really have that winger who sticks to the line and whips crosses in either. Defence is class, strikers who will score goals given some decent support from midfield, particularly the wingers. But thats as much down to Pearson playing Gallagher and Oakley on the 'wings'
lanxfox Posted 2 June 2010 Posted 2 June 2010 There is a significant rebuild required, we have a strong spine in Weale, Hobbs, Morrison, Wellens, and King. After that it falls apart, for me the jury is still out on Fryatt at this level, but with some better support he may kick on and get those 20 goals, and Bruno is a season older and he can't get much slower surely? The rest we currently have on our books are just not up to it and if we are to progress as a team this season we need to address this in the close season. He's not even slow at the moment, did you see his 40 yard run against Cardiff where he got took down nastily, he must have another 4 seasons left in him not 2.
