After writing Leicester City match reports for most of the season with the BBC, I would like to take this a step further and maybe look in to a permanent career in sports journalism.

Any advice on what I can do?

Thanks :)

Are there any distance learning courses available or do they do them at one of the Leicester Unis? With the BBC work under your belt any prospective course tutor would snap your hand off to sign you up (not literally though as I guess you would need your hand for writing)

They have a post graduate one-year course in Sociology of Sport at Leicester Uni, but that would cost me £3,000. :(

I looked into a postgrad journalism course at de Montfort, it's NCTJ-accredited but costs a bomb and it's 9 to 5 and you're not allowed to work at all. Starting wage is around £12,000 and it's long hours and little pay. That was enough to put me off being a journalist, at least in the near future while I pay off my student loan.

It's also very competitive from what I hear, so it could prove difficult even if I wanted to consider doing something like that. :( I suppose all I can do is keep plugging away with these match reports and see where that leads me.

d love to be a journalist scowy! how did you get into the BBC thing?

I used to write articles and match reports for two Leicester sites called The Leicester Fox and Leicester City Web, the latter covering the academy in great detail. Unfortunately, both sites were closed down because a certain Webmaster took away the webspace...

Anyway, Shum gave me a contact for an editor at BBC Leicester, who compiles the local website, and I got in touch about the work I did for those aforementioned sites. The editor was impressed and wanted me to write match reports for all LCFC games this season, which would then be uploaded to the site. In return, I would be provided free Press Passes for away games, although I've only taken on that option once. That was away at Rotherham, however, I didn't like sitting there. I couldn't celebrate either goals as I was surrounded by Rotherham fans in the home end!

the only problem is Scowy is you are restricting yourself purely to football..

to make it in journalism u might/will have to write reports on other sports and general news articles..

people wont accept you if you are not flexible

That is a good point. ;) I'm not really a sports fanatic, but I would still enjoy the opportunity of covering other sports. A bit of variety I suppose.

I wouldn't mind going in to general journalism either.

Scowy, your Football reports are of a very high standard. You also seem like an Intelligent chap. Like Tom said though you just wont be able to do Football reports. Suppose you will just have to put up with the other Sports. Im sure you could do it.

Well that was a morale boosting post for Scowy wasn't it :)

Toms right about buying the papers, they sometimes have in the very small print towards the back, courses and jobs that maybe useful - also in WHSmiths they tend to sell specialist mags (tis where I get my crafting ones from) and im sure Ive seen a journo one in there.

Ultimately, in the end mate, do what makes you happy and the rest will follow :)

You may be pleased to know that my father covered football matches in the late 50's, including one game that had Len Shackleton reporting on a Sunderland game. During the game LS was jumping up and down as Sunderland scored, but he was still able to get the copy in. :D:D:thumbup:;) You might have to try a little harder.;)
