Shrenchel Posted 7 July 2010 Posted 7 July 2010 Cheapest I could find last year was £290 and that was a dump 30 minutes away. Looked at a couple of houses around Gloucester Road, Hotwells, etc; living in Rahland wasn't really a priority. People seem to think the place we actually ended up in is cheap for £340, it's obscene. Probably save £30-40 a month on buses, taxis, buying lunch at greggs, etc being a minute away from the Wils Building but I'd have happily paid less and walked further. Wanna get into st pauls/monty mate. Know some lads living in a 5 bed at the croft end of ashley road that they pay £950 a month. I'm looking at moving back permanently, probably shift in with some mates that live down by grosvenor for £45 a week each. All walkable from the uni. It's completely fair enough that students want to live somehwere more 'studenty', that's part of being a student I guess. Can't really expect the government to legislate about a 'problem' thats a lot more about personal preference than lack of options though.
stez Posted 8 July 2010 Posted 8 July 2010 That very much depends on where you live. Yes, technically I'd survive without a car but living in a rural village with no useful form of public transport (it only provides the option of getting to the nearest town late in the evening and coming back the next morning, for example!) I wouldn't be able to work unless I got a job in the village shop and certainly wouldn't be able to keep my current job. Prostitution would be the only viable option, and I'm not sure I'd earn much doing that. or if one lived in a village with no jobs, and no bus service. People who live in places with fantastic (round here, a bus a week would be considered fantastic) who like to say people should use their cars less/not at all. Same with the people who whitter on about putting the price of petrol up, to 'encourage' more people onto public transport, i, and other country dwelling folk, take all the hit and see non of the benefits of higher fuel prices. Having said that, i draw less than the 14k and 'survive' but it's getting tougher.

Pretty impressive, I might have to look harder next year and forget living with two ex-public schoolboys. And yeah, I was thinking aloud really as it literally struck me as I was reading it, it'd never happen, it'd just be nice. Probably doesn't help that half the people I'm at uni with are getting generous handouts from their parents back in the south-east. What's Montpelier like? I know St. Pauls is supposed to be a lot better than it's reputation. First day of uni in halls a policeman gave us a security talk and started a sentence something like "and St. Pauls... just.... don't ever go to St. Pauls". He was totally serious too, didn't even crack a smile. Looking again there seems to be a bit of a premium for living with 6 or more people too, which is annoying.
Shrenchel Posted 10 July 2010 Posted 10 July 2010 Pauls is fine nowadays. You'll get no trouble unless you act like a complete spanner. You can spot dealers and that if you're looking for them but unless you're a yardie trying to nick their spot on frontline then they'll never even look twice at you. Far more likely to run into problems walking round the centre at night. Montpelier's nice, lots of middle-class organic food and poetry night characters moved in over the last few years so prices have gone up a bit but decent community type feel, bit more chilled out than st pauls I guess.
Mr B Posted 15 July 2010 Posted 15 July 2010 Well my fags cost me about £1,00 a year, so i will just have to starve myself for a few months in the middle
Alexikokopops Posted 16 July 2010 Posted 16 July 2010 Out of curiosity I had a look at house prices for where I live now and where I grew up. For the price of a one bedroom flat where I live now I can get a four bedroom detached cottage in the village I grew up in. It's my own fault, I just wasn't expecting it to be quite that ridiculous.
