unreachable Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Paulo Sousa has said we didn't play zonal in the last 2 games. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/leicester_city/default.stm So, presumably, it's good old bad defending however you choose to label the systems played. PS is "feeding the players resources" to make the right decision at the appropriate times to either play zonal or man to man. So much for all the expert contributions in this thread.
Lillehamring Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 i think soem of the goals have probably been down to simple individual errors, but i posted this capture from just before one of palace's goals and you can see that whatever system they are supposed to be playing, at this particular moment no one had a clue what they should have been doing.
andy_croydz Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Well if we played man-marking against Palace then the defence were awful at it

That was Palace's third goal when Nielson was man marking the goalscorer on the extreme left and then left him to try to defend on the line. He should have stayed with his man.

He should have stayed with his man. i think of the EIGHT city players in that picture they only ones who can't really be criticised are weale and neilsen, as they are the only two who are actually trying to prevent the goal, there is an awful lack of activity from the others, watching the playback the four in the middle are literally jogging about... i don't recall when neilsen abandons the palace player but clearly he's not getting any support from the others. he has seen weale commit and has gone to the line to cover, which is pretty normal, none of those four in the middle make any effort to pick up the palace player. the reason i picked out this image is to demonstrate that on some of the goals it is a collective failure, there are four defenders and three midfielders (i guess) in this image, but no shape and no organisation and players not taking responsibility, there are enough city players to triple mark the (mobile) palace forwards. the first goal was an individual mistake, the second a long range goal which, if memory serves, we were prone to conceding last season. so, there isn't a specific problem with the defence but a range of different problems. would be interesting to get a look at last nights goals.

Last night's goals are in davieg's thread. I don't want to labour the point (much) but I felt that Nielson should have gone towards the ball and gone with the goalscorer on "his" side of the goalmouth when there would have been more chance of stopping the shot than clearing off the line. As you say the defence collectively were all over the place at that stage. I doubt whether Nielson will play much this season - he'll be cover for Lamey.
The MayneFox Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 I dont like it how were trying to "pass the ball out of defence" Hobbs hasnt been himself Hobbs and Morrison=Bad defence we need an experienced centre back with Hobbs and stick Morrison at RB
dandannieldanok Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 I haven't read any of the thread so I may not have followed the line of debate with this.... .....but in direct response to the thread title? I personally would do nothing more than is already being done to 'sort the defence'. Yes quite clearly it has suffered greatly with Sousa's new style, but we've also appeared to be a lot more dangerous in attack which is refreshing. Therefore if I was Sousa, I'd continue with exactly the principles he's tried to instil and review the situation after 10 league games. If after those games the defence is quite clearly being detrimental to our results then he should address it and change things.
hackneyfox Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 I'd agree except that in 10 games time we will be between transfer windows. If Tunchev isn't going to be back soon we may well need experienced cover.
