Scarby Posted 26 May 2005 Author Posted 26 May 2005 FANS SET OFF ON A SUMMER TOUR BY NIGEL UNDERWOOD 10:35 - 26 May 2005 Leicester City fan Tom Johns is set to embark on an epic journey which will take him to more than 200 football grounds, all in the name of charity. Tom, from Great Glen, and his friend Nick Friar have set themselves the challenge of visiting all 225 grounds of the clubs in the top 10 football leagues. They are planning to take Tom's car from the peak of the Premiership to the lows of the Isthmian League. The pair will visit an average of 11 grounds per day and, despite finding some free accommodation, will spend a lot of nights in the car. The trip has been organised to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief. Tom said: "We think it is a charity that everyone can relate to. "Most people have been affected by news of cancer directly or indirectly at some point in their lives." Tom is also sure that many football fans will support them on their mission. He said: "It's every football fan's dream to visit all the grounds in the country. "We will go from big clubs such as Manchester United to tiny unknowns such as Prescot Cables." Tom and Nick will be photographed outside every ground they reach and are hoping they will be invited in for a look around. They are also hoping to gather donations of football shirts, which they will auction. Sue Megginson, fund-raising manager at Macmillan, said: "Events such as this make such a difference and provide invaluable support for the work Macmillan does. "It's absolutely fantastic. "The money raised will make such a difference to people living with cancer, their families and their carers. "We are very grateful to Tom and Nick for the support they're showing." A website has been set up in support of the tour, at which people can pledge a donation. Tom and Nick have been keeping an on-line diary of their progress from the initial idea and planning of the trip to setting off on the journey.
