foxilescom Posted 1 June 2005 Posted 1 June 2005 Hi Does anybody on here run the 'Find a Drug' programme in the background of their computer whilst they are working ? FAD is trying to help scientists find cures / treatments for such as Cancer , Aids, CJD etc etc. You get points for running the FAD and they have league tables etc to keep your interest. Its an interesting thing to do and lets you try and help in a small way to find answers to some of lifes great problems. For more details. please see http://www.find-a-drug.org.uk/ I am YORKFOX , you can set up teams , and if there were to be some interest, we could set up an LCFC Fans team maybe ?. hope this is of interest, thanks for reading Keith
Muz Posted 1 June 2005 Posted 1 June 2005 I think ive done it... If ive done it right should there be a little box entitled ' THINK ' on my desktop?
foxilescom Posted 1 June 2005 Author Posted 1 June 2005 Do you have a little pale blue icon on the toolbar ?. If you do. right click that, QUEUE, and it should show if you have downloaded units to run . If you right click, GRAPHICS, you should see a unit running. I will post again when I get a team set up.
foxilescom Posted 1 June 2005 Author Posted 1 June 2005 Hi, You join FIND A DRUG with user name, email address etc . You then download a small programme , about 1.5MB and install it. You then download a number of units, ( 10,000 molecules ) Your computer then cruches in the background of your computer to see if any of the molecules match a certain pattern that scientists are looking for, say if they are looking for something to help Cancer Research. Computer keeps grinding on, and depending on the speed of your computer, it might take 10 hours or 10 days to work through the unit, looking for matches. You end up with results that you then return to Find a drug, eg, in the 10,000 molecules that I have tested, 42 of them are possible for further research in the scientists tests. It cuts down the work that the scientist have to do, ie maybe test 20,000 molecules instead of 200 million ! . You then get points for the time taken, these can be shown in league tables which keeps people interest. Some people run what they call Computer Farms, ie, they have 30 computers chewing over the molecules, receiving and returning results. Sounds a bit complicated, but mainly you are trying to help the scientists find cures for the bad things in life. How this helps. If you need more info about FAD or how to install it , look on the FAD websites, and look on the messageboards. Keith H

Collymore Posted 4 June 2005 Posted 4 June 2005 hmmmmm, downloaded this program but not to happy with it nearly frying my CPU make sure you get some heat monitoring software if you are using find a drug. My CPU went from 56 oc to 73 oc when it was running in the background.

My PC is too valuable to me to be used as some sort of third party device, I couldn't live without my PC and I'm not going to install any programmes that I don't trust. And this is one of them.
