Scow Posted 2 June 2005 Posted 2 June 2005 I thought I would give you boys as unbiased an opinion on the above two players as possible given all the sh*te that's been posted by Celtic and Ranger's fans.Douglas - very good shot-stopper, can command his box but seems to lose his confidence every once in a while. He will win you games but he'll also cost you once in a while. Does put in the effort and he will give it his best. Sylla - a bit of an enigma this boy. O'Neill snapped him up for pittance after he ran the Celtic midfield ragged for St Johnstone at Celtic Park. Once at Celtic he kind of vanished from the scene and never really got a chance. He did well against Barcelona when he came on as a sub at Celtic Park in the Champions League this season(linking up particularly well with Henri Camara!) and against Arsenal in a friendly a Highbury he was full of tricks. It will take the right manager, playing him in the right position and providing him with confidence in order to get the best out of him. This boy could well be a gem - or he could simply fail to shine. Fingers crossed for you guys. andy_croydz Posted 2 June 2005 Posted 2 June 2005 Thats very good news, my friends who watch scottish football say sylla is very quick thats all they know and as a keeper myself im hoping douglas will be an inspired signing because i see it very important to get the right number 1 this season.

To add my bit about Big Rab and Sylla.. as quoted before Douglas is a good shot stopper and can be commanding at times,but does have the odd "flap" now and then but he is a pretty experienced keeper with Champions League experience so I think you can be pretty pleased with the signing. As an unbiased Hearts supporter Im pleased that you've got Sylla who is one of the hundreds of players over the years who have fallen foul of the OF's career wrecking policy of buying up all the opposition's star players then dropping them off in the reserves/youths where there career goes down the pan !! This in itself it another thread/discussion altogether. At St Johnstone he was a star, I remember him scoring a scorcher from 30 yds to beat Rangers 1-0 at Perth. He played mostly right back or right wing back at that time but has been used in a variety of roles for Celtic reserves including centre forward! Im just pleased to see a player escape the clutches of the Ugly Sisters and hopefully blossem for you under CL. He's young and fast and I think he'll do a great job for you.

I think it shows just what the OF have done with Sylla when you describe him as young - the guy is 28 and he's now got the time of his contract with us to make up for the three or four years on the scrapheap at Sellik. People may scorn Levein's policy of buying players from Scotland but it's the market he knows best and Maybury and Hughes have shown exactly why we shouldn't be turning our noses up.

weegie jambo Posted 2 June 2005 Posted 2 June 2005 IMHO you understand, Kris Boyd- everyone seems to be trying to buy him at the moment. He has scored a few goals this season but he is the only decent striker Killie have got so laws of average he's going to get the lions share of their goals.Must admit Im not that impressed with him,just a half decent striker in a crap team,but there again could improve in a better team. Calum Elliot-he's one of our young strikers and Ive only seen him make a couple of subs appearances. Once v ICT 2 seasons ago where he looked well out of his depth, but came on v Celtic this season and looked a lot more confident.Still young and inexperienced IMO, not worth buying right now unless you're going to stick him in the youth team and nurture his career, which is what we're doing now. Burton O'Brian-another who everyone is linked with right now,us included.Looks a good complete player,creative,can score,suffers from playing with a struggling Livi team.seen him a couple of times this season,centre/right midfield and he looks the part.Really needs a move to a better team to fulfill his potential after an early career move to Blackburn (I think) didnt come off. LCFC/HMFC?? Scott Severin-product of our famed youth academy and only released last season as a wage cutting exercise.God knows why! Jambo through and through,international, holding midfield but a revelation at centre half for the sheep-shaggers this season just gone. A few people,me included would love to see him back now that we've got rid of the ars***** chairman whose policies forced us to let him go in the first place. Hands off, he's ours Hope this fills you in a bit. Cheers

I still think we need 2 centyre halves though as I want some players playing there that it's their favoured position. McCarthy is a proper centre half but Dublin is a converted one and by the sounds of it so is Severin.

As some-one else said, the Old Firm have this habit of buying players who play well against them then let the rot away on big wages. A few years ago, Paul Ritchie was an outstanding prospect at Hearts and had just won a Scoittish Cup winners medal when along came Rangers who bought him. The manager, Dick Advocaat however didn't fancy him so told David Murray, the Rangers owner who had bought him, that he wou;dn't play him. Ritchie was sold on to Manchester City, subsequently loaned out here there and everywhere and has finally ended up at Dundee United. David Fernandez was signed by Celtic from Livingston after a few good games. Remember seeing his name in the Celtic line-up a couple of season ago during their UEFA Cup run? No, neither did I, because they don't play him. Jeez, I'm ranting!!! Getting on to Rab Douglas. He will cost you games. Whilst he is a decent shot stopper, he's like Dracula, he hates crosses!! Scott Severin should NEVER have been allowed to leave Tynecastle, but he has and if he ends up at Leicester, then he'll not let you down whereever he plays.

I can't say I've been overly impressed with Douglas when I've seen him play, but I'm more than prepared to give him a chance if he does sign on with us. Players are largely dependent on confidence, and maybe Douglas has had a problem with that. When playing for one of the Old Firm, mistakes tend to be magnified hugely, so that can't have helped him or any player...
