Zingari Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 this has got me a bit scared , does being a vibrant city mean that there is going to be an earthquake or something ?
BlueSi13 Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 Sad to say but Leicester is well regarded across the country as one of the most dire cities in the whole of the UK. Though we have nice "bits" the city on the whole looks completely forgotten and broken. Though it has a big population, it is of almost no importance to the UK economy in terms of manufacturing, financial, political worth etc. Similar to Bradford in that respect. It is also in the bottom 5 poorest cities in the country, with company such as Hull, Blackpool, Caerphilly and Sunderland. As someone who has travelled extensively, the only place i have found worse so far is Luton. We aren't even within 2 or 3 leagues of our more influential Midlands neighbours such as Nottingham and Birmingham, let alone the Southern and Northern giants, London, Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, York etc. People move to those cities from places such as Leicester once they become educated, it is never the other way round thanks to the complete lack of any industry in the city. The horrible thing about it is, though developments in the city infrastructure such as the Highcross, The Curve etc were supposed to make the city more attractive to outside investment to make us compete, none of it has worked. Jesus wept.

Total nonsense. The diversity of the city's population shows that it attracts people from many parts of the world, and indeed of the UK too. The horrible thing about it is, though developments in the city infrastructure such as the Highcross, The Curve etc were supposed to make the city more attractive to outside investment to make us compete, none of it has worked. Jesus wept. So why has tourism in Leicester increased by 10% in the past five years? It's time we got rid of this inferiority complex once and for all!
accessory Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 How do you mean exactly? The Merc may be many things but its hardly oppressive in the way it views its readership. Oh really? So why does it delight in highlighting every incident of crime (thus increasing fear and negativity among the community), while ignoring the many positive achievements that occur in the city?
Fosse Boy Posted 15 May 2011 Posted 15 May 2011 Oh really? So why does it delight in highlighting every incident of crime (thus increasing fear and negativity among the community), while ignoring the many positive achievements that occur in the city? Maybe because they make better stories? But I think you're being unfair to the Merc anyway, it's hardly a moral panic fearmongering tabloid type of rag is it? Plenty of positive stories in there every day.
dave the caveman Posted 15 May 2011 Posted 15 May 2011 Total nonsense. The diversity of the city's population shows that it attracts people from many parts of the world, and indeed of the UK too. Leicester is not an international city, it's an international dumping ground: it attracts only the much poorer immigrants. You very rarely get people from richer countries like America, Canadia, Australia, France, Germany etc coming to Leicester in the same way you do in other British cities. It's not an inferiority complex, it's just the truth. You only have to travel as far as Nottingham to see the difference. Although by the same token you only have to travel as far as Coventry to see how much worse we could have it.

You mean mass amounts of unskilled labour from developing countries? Leicester has always been the same in that respect, first it was the Irish, then the South Asians, then the Africans, now the Eastern Europeans. They used to come here because we had industry, the problem is that now we don't, meaning high unemployment of a highly unskilled workforce, therefore creating a massive brain-drain of Leicester born graduates, thus creating a bit of a vicious cycle the city can't get out of.
Zingari Posted 15 May 2011 Posted 15 May 2011 So from just before WW 2 , when Leicester had been identified as the second richest city in Europe, we are now in the bottom 5 of the UK ? What the fook happened ? Where's the money gone ?
