Aahh, something new and refreshing from the land of Silvio Berlusconi and daytime soft porn on regular TV.

Italy: Giuseppe Signori held in football fixing probe

_53103659_012120092-1.jpgGiuseppe Signori, 43, who was one of Italy's leading strikers, leaves a police station in BolognaFormer Italy footballer Giuseppe Signori and 15 other people have been arrested by Italian police for alleged match-fixing.

The others held are said to include ex-Serie A players, current players from both Serie B and Serie C, club directors from lower leagues and betting shop employees.

They are accused of organising the rigging of matches to fix bets.

Eighteen matches are under investigation.

They include this season's Serie A clash between Inter Milan and Lecce, and matches involving Siena and Atalanta, who both earned promotion to Serie A.

Police in towns and cities across Italy including Rome, Turin, Naples, Bologna, Ancona, Cremona and Ferrara issued detention orders for the 16 people.

Signori, 43, who is being held under house arrest, was one of Italy's leading strikers in the 1990s. He was top scorer in Serie A three times with Rome club Lazio.

He declined to comment on the allegations.

At least five teams from the Serie A are under investigation - AS Roma, Fiorentina, Lecce, Genoa and Cagliari.

One game that sticks out is the match AS Roma vs. Genoa in late February, which Genoa won 4-3 after being 3-0 down.

Attempts at buying players failed when Inter faced Lecce away and Inter prevailed in a 1-0 win.

And more than 30 games from last season seem to have been affected - mostly in the lower leagues of Serie B and C.

Atalanta Bergamo and Siena, both promoted, could be forced to remain in the Serie B.

It is rumoured that Siena bought some Sassuolo players when they won 4-0 at home two months ago.

Ravenna sports director Giorgio Buffone has admitted he had fixed some matches "for the love of the club".

Tax advisor Francesco Giannone has told officials he had bribed Cremonese Calcio's goalkeeper. Police also found four cheques with a total value of 450'000 Euros at Giannone's place.

It is said that the Camorra were used for money laundering, some clues hint at the involvement of organised crime in Albania.

Signori was a legend for me in Champ Man 01-02 spearheading me Liverpool attack with Owen and Fowler. I feel betrayed.

Italian football is fast becoming a joke, ANOTHER bribery scandal. Ridic

It will be interesting to see how UEFA deal with this. Yet ANOTHER bribery/match fixing scandal in Italy. You can bet your house that if it was occurring here, Platini and UEFA would be viewing it differently.
