Guest Bilo Posted 11 July 2012 Posted 11 July 2012 What VB says. Try to get experience at a local paper, maybe enrol at a university (DMU do a MA/PGDip course in Journalism with NUJ accreditation) and work your way into the industry that way.
Rincewind Posted 11 July 2012 Posted 11 July 2012 Thing I do on a Tuesday night with Down Not Out has mostly people who have been homeless and in hostels involved. Last night they were recalling stories for a 'Neighbours From Hell' section for the next issue. These people have had little experience. I think a couple have done media studies. The idea is that they teach others in the position they were in who in turn will pass on what they have learned. I know it isn't proper journalism as in newspapers but its hands on stuff and interesting. In the Citezens' Eye group there are University students involved so as to gain experience. My main reasons for being involved is that I need to do something whils out of work and it is the closest to what I am interested, in able to do and enjoy. Cannot think of any other activity I could have done (apart from a job) that would have prevented me from going down the depression road.
ozleicester Posted 12 July 2012 Posted 12 July 2012 Journalism and news reporting are in a world of turmoil at the moment. In Australia the two biggest media organisations are currently cutting their journalist staffing by around 20% each. Just suggesting that if you are going into it... make sure you get a quality degree and that you have a good plan as to where you see it taking you. The collapse of quality journalism is something we will all regret in the coming years Good Luck
