R.I.P. Alex Alves

It has been announced that former Belo Horizonte and long-time Hertha BSC Berlin striker Alex Alves, 37, has died from cancer or the consequences of leukemia.

The exact cause for his death is unknown, as his family wishes for privacy.

Alves never really mentioned the illness himself and struggled under poor conditions, with little money left, in the last stages of his life, impoverished. A final bone-marrow transplant from his brother proved to be unsuccessful.

He spent three seasons in Berlin, scoring 25 times in 81 games for Hertha, including the "goal of the season" in the year 2000:
