I've just installed iTunes on my new laptop. Will i be able to sync my iPod so that all the songs on my iPod transfer onto my iTunes or is there some stupid rule preventing that?

You either need to get some 3rd party software to do that or you can have a go yourself if you're reasonably computer savvy.
