lcfc"weasel" Posted 9 March 2013 Posted 9 March 2013 Bit of a long shot probably, but does anyone host there own web server? If so, what components do you use? Did you build it yourself? What OS are you running on it? Do you have reliability issues? What ISP do you use? Thanks.
danny. Posted 11 March 2013 Posted 11 March 2013 Do you literally mean at home, or a dedicated server or co-lo in a data centre?
MrSpaM Posted 11 March 2013 Posted 11 March 2013 You can host one on a linux machine pretty easily using webmin. Most people just get a web hosting service to do it though, its a lot cheaper than running your own.
danny. Posted 11 March 2013 Posted 11 March 2013 plus hosting at home yourself would be insanely slow for people visiting a site on there, unless you have a £2000/mo fast synchronous connection.

MrSpaM Posted 12 March 2013 Posted 12 March 2013 Heard apache is the best OS for web servers. Pretty sure Webmin uses apache anyway, it just gives you a nice GUI front end thats easy to understand, and it installs itself without having to mess about with a lot of stuff.
lavrentis Posted 12 March 2013 Posted 12 March 2013 ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Apache, always had apache on it, maybe nginx would be better but I havn't used it
lavrentis Posted 16 March 2013 Posted 16 March 2013 Nginx or lighttp are much quicker than apache Maybe but if were talking millseconds a small-medium sized website won't notice much difference.
