i disagree, why should I not be rewarded because my parents have decent jobs? my parents don't give me £10 a week or £100 bonuses so i lose out at the end of the day. and i dont have an ipod

Its a caricature, I'm not syaing everyone who doesn't get EMA is spoilt. I don't do myself, although I would never complain about it.

The principle is that if you needed a new pair of trousers then your parents would be able to afford them. If your school was going ona school trip then your parents would be able to afford to send you. Your parents are able to give you the money for your lunch money and bus fayres.

Ofocurse it is an imperfect sytem. There are soem that benefit disproportionately fromt he scheme and those who miss out. However, the government can't legislate for this and the general principle of the scheme is undeniably noble.

What stops students getting part time jobs? If you're not receiving money from your parents (Like in Rossporter's example) then do something about it.

my point is though that why should i cut into time where i could be studying to work, when people get paid to study?

I agree with you Ross, I think every student should get paid the same amount for attending college, i mena whose fault is it that your parents earn more money than others?? not yours??

£35 isn't much at all, and you wouldn't have to work that many hours to get that anyway.

If you really needed the money, I'm sure your parents wouldn't refuse you.

I don't particularly agree with this EMA system, but if you're moaning about others getting money, then it's for a reason - Their families can't support them financially.

I managed to study for 3 A-levels, work part-time on Saturday mornings and Friday evenings, watch City on Saturday afternoons, go football training, be a part of the 6th form drama society, and have ample time for socialising.

I received no Government handout during this time.

i do 5 a levels though

That's because they're easier than when I did them :P

Seriously though, we never had the option of doing more than 3. I understand, and corect me if I'm wrong, but aren't you allowed to study 5 in your first year, but drop two in the 2nd year, and have those two dropped two as AS levels?

Plus, why is it you want to study? Like most people, it will be because you want to get better qualifications to get a better job, and obviously the remuneration to go with it. You get nothing for free in this life, or you certainly shouldn't anyway, and what is two years sacrifice or whatever compared with 35+ years of a great salary?

Maths and sciences I assume? They're ok, as at least you have defined rules, and not so much grey area.

I found English the hardest to be honest, because it's got bugger all to do with your opinions, if they mattered why on earth were Letts Study Guides available? I would spend hours on essays, only to be told, "you can't put that yet, that's degree level stuff". I also got slated by my classmates for saying that Shakespeare wrote entertainment for the masses, but at least my teacher stuck up for me then!

I did 5 AS Levels and will probably do 5 A levels, it is a very easy workload. 30 hours a week work maximum. There is ample time to geta part time job.

if you say so, one of my subjects requires 50% of the work to be done outside of lesson time and it does depend on what subjects you are doing
