Random Burglar Posted 3 August 2005 Posted 3 August 2005 2005 Spring Season Review by Tom Measures After a mediocre season in Division 3, Manager Colin Childs duly took the step to take the Wizards into the basement league known as Division 6. To many it seems, the Wizards have been spiralling down the leagues since there 2nd place finish in the Sunday Premier League not so long ago. After the loss of customary players David Goudie, Gavin Webb, Finn McConnell, Sunny Matharu, James Searston, Steve Allan and Graham Collier over previous seasons, the Wizards were looking to gain some morality in the coming season ahead. The Wizards started the new campaign against WTP Mark with founder members Colin Childs and Tom Measures in action, and in a close-fought battle, the Wizards narrowly took the spoils 5-4. This set up the season ahead for the Wizards and the next game proved to be emphatic. In the next game against Leroy And His Coudroy Groovers, the Wizards took centre stage to record the clubs highest ever victory of 14-1. Mike Faulkner was cruelly denied his first ever clean sheet from a singular opponents break but otherwise had a quiet game. The Wizards were looking superior in top spot early on in the new season. The only predicament for the team was having a consistent 7 during the season and this proved against Lee Clarke. A meagre showing against an average team defeated the Wizards 10-2. The Wizards then faced early pace-setters Shamrock Rovers. A more encouraging performance couldn't stop the rot as the Rovers claimed all three points 10-5. Mike Faulkner scored a rare goal in an altogether infrequent appearance on the field, and this was Gavin Webb swansong game for Cocktail Wizards, leaving the field with one last hat-trick to his renowned status. A no-show from Monsell Allstars meant the Wizards rocketed back up with the big boys into 3rd position in the league. However, two straight defeats by Thurnby Foxes and Ball Hogs were to follow to send the Wizards back down to 5th position in the league. However, this spurred the Wizards into a 3 match unbeaten run, where new boys Rob Hillsdon, Craig Dickens and Sam Cobley were the stars in an 8-0 FA Cup win against FC Bouncebackability. Rob Hillsdon scored his first ever hat-trick and Sam Cobley scored a record 5. Mike Faulkner finally claimed his first ever clean sheet. Wins against WTP Mark and Leroy And His Coudroy Groovers followed with the Wizards camp on a high. Lee Clarke sent the Wizards crashing back to earth as they struggled to an 8-6 win. Tom Measures and Sam Cobley both scored hat-tricks, but in dismay to the score line. This was followed by Wizards biggest loss of the season, 11-3 to Champions-elect Shamrock Rovers. The Wizards claimed an 11-9 victory against Monsell Allstars, but this result showed the Wizards still has a long way to go as the opponents had 1 less player on the pitch throughout the game. With two games of the season to go, the Wizards could only finish 3rd in the league, and they languished in 4th after a dramatic 4-4 draw against Thurnby Foxes. Tom Measures was in remarkable form as the 2nd choice goalkeeper kept the foxes at bay for large periods of the game. Elliott Varnam showed that he is the Wizards most consistent performer with an all-round defensive display. The last game of the season proved to be the most dramatic of the lot. Not only was 3rd place up for grabs in the league, but the race for the golden boot intensified. Tom Measures, leading on 11 once again had to go in goal due to a freak Faulkner injury, which meant Rob Hillsdon and Sam Cobley, 10 and 9 goals respectively were looking to steal the boot with this inside advantage. The Ball Hogs narrowly escaped with a victory 7-5 after some poor refereeing but a spirited performance by the boys means there is much hope for next season. Rob Hillsdon scored and Sam Cobley bagged a brace to ensue that the golden boot would split 3 ways. Cocktail Wizards finished the season in 5th position. This concluding mid-table finish means the Wizards will be looking for promotion next season with new players Ben Lowen, Craig Dickens and Sam Cobley looking to sign on.
