stockyfox Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 For me – and for most City fans of that period, the late 50’s / 60’s was our ‘goal-den’ era. Having enjoyed a superb 1956 / 57 season – when we were treated to a goal-fest with 44 scored by the left foot of one Arthur Rowley, 18 from the talented Ian McNeil, and another 10 from goal-machine Derek Hines, we were upgraded to the dizzy heights of Division 1 where we were to stay for the next twelve seasons. Twelve glorious years when we graced the hallowed turf of Wembley on three occasions –(yes, I know we lost but it was still an honour!), we won the league cup in ’64 and reached the final again the following year, losing out to Chelsea). We actually topped Division 1 during ’63,finishing 4th. We were hailed the ‘Ice-age’ Champions. We entered the European Cup-winners Cup’ when the manager of Atletico Madrid told Billy King of the Leicester Mercury that Leicester were one of the best sides he had seen in years! So how does our present team and squad compare with that of the record-breaking 60’s? My personal opinion has been steadfastly in favour of the 60’s team but I must admit that I think our present team might just be gaining the upper hand. And for a bit of fun, if I could combine the squads and had all the players available to chose from now: The 60’s – Gordon Banks, john Sjoberg, Ritchie Norman, Frank Mclintock, Ian King, Colin Appleton, Howard Riley, Graham Cross, Ken Keyworth, Davie Gibson, Mike Stringfellow , Peter Shilton, Peter Rodrigues, David Nish, Jackie Sinclair, Derek Dougan, Allan Clarke, , This would be my dream – team!: In goal – Peter Shilton, Back 4 – David Nish, Peter Rodrigues, Wes Morgan, Ritchie Norman, Midfield – Danny Drinkwater, Matty James, Colin Appleton (Captain) Forwards – Jamie Vardy, Davie Gibsoin and Mike Stringfellow.
LC/FC Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 I await the 'oldies' to share with the rest of us some superlative history.
biggs Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 The later 60's were my introduction to Leicester City and loved going to the match's with my dad. You've brought back so old but exciting memories
davieG Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 I'd definitely have Ian King in the back four, aren't 3 of yours fullbacks? Other than that it's a tad difficult because the formations were different and I don't think either played 433 certainly not on their better days.

Vardy would be a 100% joke in that team. The whole line up is a farce, as football then was an attacking game, and not the total rubbish we have to tolerate today. Beat this. Gordon Banks Len Chalmers, David Nish Frank Mclintock, Ian King, Graham Cross, Keith Weller, Frank Worthington, Derek Dougan, Davie Gibson, Len Glover. That is the old sixties formation of 2, 3 5, when attacking was the name of the game, and there were no substitutes. They would wipe the floor with today's side. FACT!
