Preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics are the "worst" ever seen, according to International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates.

It's nice that the IOC and FIFA are intent on taking major sporting events to the rest of the world, but I am not sure why they are surprised that the countries they select often struggle to meet preparation deadlines. Things will come together eventually, but in developing countries it is often a last minute thing, and the IOC and FIFA should understand that by now.

As you say, I am sure they will get there in the end. The furore over the World Cup Stadiums seems to have died down now and I assume all will be ready in time. I seem to remember that Athens struggled with preparations for the Summer Olympics in 2004. I suppose it makes it all the more astonishing that the London games were so well prepared and mostly went off without a hitch.

Absolutely love the Olympics and I hope Rio puts on a great show. I bet Tokyo 2020 doesn't suffer the same problems!
