Stuliasz Posted 14 June 2014 Posted 14 June 2014 Greece are my sweepstake team. Thank god there's a wooden spoon prize!
Amin Posted 15 June 2014 Posted 15 June 2014 His name is ****ing James not Hames. I hope Columbia get knocked out just so I don't have to listen to this all bloody tournament How do you pronounce David Luiz? Edgar Davids? I can't stand it when people pronounce names the wrong way, especially when they know they're wrong.
lc4lcfc Posted 15 June 2014 Posted 15 June 2014 I got both in sweepstakes haha looks like Greece is a dud I'll have to really on the might of Columbia Ecuador and Iran!
Alf Bentley Posted 15 June 2014 Posted 15 June 2014 James Delighted to see my second team put on a good performance - and a fine goal celebration. About 23-24 years ago I spent a few months wandering around Latin America, and Colombia - more particularly, Colombians - were an absolute highlight. I've never met such an open, friendly, generous, outgoing bunch. That goal celebration was like seeing them express their national character. Excellent! p.s. "Hámess" would be the natural pronunciation, with a slightly guttural "H", as if gobbing from the throat very slightly (but less strong than the gobbing sound would have been in most of Spain), emphasis on the first syllable, more of an "-ess" ending than a "-ez", though might have been more like Háme', if they were "common people" (© Cocker, J.). That's unless the player or his parents deliberately opted to use an English pronunciation (unlikely as they'd find it very hard to pronounce)....if they did, then it's "James". Years ago, a French bloke picked me up hitch-hiking and explained how he'd visited the English city of "Sooi-ton'ton'". In the South of England, apparently.....quite a large port.....took me ages to realise that he meant that city that has just lost it's manager to Spurs and most of its best players to Liverpool or Man Utd....
