The unemployment figure is a concern which from what I've read isn't likely to come down untill 2027. Think ai growth is good but it's not going to help bring down unemployment much. All the long term infrastructure projects they're clearing/giving the go ahead too certainly will but that's going to take time. The construction industry will take years even if the government pumped lots of funding in there so the NI tax increase is biting more there I reckon. I work in haulage and it's been pretty good last 6 months. January is our quietest time of year and it's been quite a busy month which is promising.

Tbf there's been quite a lot of positive news stories on the economy since the budget. https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk-businesses-consumers-show-signs-recovery-budget-worries-recede-2026-01-26/ https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk-retail-sales-show-unexpected-increase-december-2026-01-23/ https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/jan/22/uk-government-borrowing-falls-december https://www.standard.co.uk/business/uk-trade-surplus-financial-services-surges-record-b1266709.html https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/01/28/britain-on-cusp-economic-boom-no-thanks-to-labour1/ Last one especially made me laugh. No thanks to Labour. Everything they are doing is damaging the economy .

Everyone seems to be assuming that Greenlanders will accept this but they will all of heard of it and so far they don't seem particularly keen to sign up.
-
Unreal isn't it. Left his resignation speech lying around. Its no wonder why the Tories were so chaotic when in government
-
Think Jenrick will definitely be a more popular defection with reform voters then Zahawi was
-
Maybe not but that wasn't my point in the slightest though. I was merely using that example to dispell @Leicesterpools notion that Starmer is more bothered about Grok.
-
Didn't he literally last week discuss and pledge to send UK troops to Ukraine in the case of peace deal? Seemed pretty important to me
-
Well done Starmer

I'm not sure it really changes much either way does it? I don't think she should've panicked and driven off but I don't think you can claim she deliberately was trying to run him over and he has enough time to move out of the way. I appreciate you have to make split second decisions but surely if the choice is move out of the way of the moving vehicle or shoot you have to choose the former. Seems like he says '****ing bitch' after he's shot her.

Markets signal a brighter UK future after lost decade. https://www.ft.com/content/92170e3e-9dec-4263-8a32-4d83cc26f6f3 Hopefully this can translate into the whole UK economy improving.

American Empire obviously exempt
-
I think that's social media and our divisive politics as much as anything else. Somehow now Starmer and Farage are both 'fascist authoritarian leaders'. Right are equally as guilty of this as the left.
-
The whole system was setup by the USA and they got exactly what they wanted out of it. Europe voted and has gone along with the US many times when it hasn't wanted to but the NATO alliance has forced their hand. Trumps biggest **** up was pushing Europeans aways from US defense companies. If he had approached it as a grown up their companies could've made a killing. Edit. No his biggest **** up but certainly a idiotic mistake

So then having the highest emissions is a travesty but investing into more green energy then the rest of the world combined is not a triumph. Hmmm I wonder if there is just a little bit of a bias here

They started some important work tbf but my criticism of them is they dithered too much as did Labour last time they were in government but to claim continuation of Tory policy I'm not sure is quite right. For example The Sizewell and Hinckley Point power plants were proposed when Labour were last in Government but both parties have been pretty pro nuclear but both just very slow in action and policy. Hinckley point C the Tories obviously got the majority of the work done and the initial SMR work they started but what's impressed me about Labour is they really seem to just get on with it much more decisively which has been Nuclear Powers biggest hurdle to overcome.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/prime-ministers-strategic-steer-to-the-nuclear-sector/prime-ministers-strategic-steer-to-the-nuclear-sector-following-the-2025-nuclear-regulatory-taskforces-review Fair play to them that could be pretty big. With the SMR, Sizewell C and now this I'm glad we are finally taking nuclear serious it's been way too long.

Feel a bit uneasy about this tbh. I'll give Labour credit on one thing. They are very decisive, if they think it's in the countries best interest they'll do it regardless of whether it's controversial or if the public even wants it
-
It should have been pretty obvious after Austerity, Lack of government infrastructure investment, Brexit and Covid but yeah there is definitely a degree of the public 'catching up' with the state of our finances. With our debt the Truss budget was about the worst thing we could have done at the time. Luckily Hunt and now Reeves have managed to reverse a lot of that now and hopefully our government borrowing costs will come down a bit.
-
Yeah I did add that tbh. Obviously the incumbents are always going to judged harder then the alternatives at that time.

This site generally seems slightly left leaning to me rather then particularly right leaning. I think in general good news doesn't get the attention it should or that it use to thanks to algorithms and social media and the bad news sells nature of 'MSM'. There definitely is a difference the way Labour is reported on and judged compared to the Tories though. Some of that is that the left isn't happy and it's idealistic nature means they tend to complain about their side more then the right complains about there side however this Labour government being as unpopular as the last Tory government and quickly as that happened show the difference that labour face in the reporting of job it's doing. Labour had one poll showing they were less trusted on the economy then even Liz Truss Tory party which is just mental (although it should be said that public don't trust anyone on the economy in that poll). There are things to criticise Labour on of course but if anyone actually believes that they could trust the Liz Truss Tories over this Labour government then they just have a massive bias against labour and I think again it shows the nature of the political system in the UK generally taking it much easier on the right.

It does but to be fair to the US they do have a point when it comes to NHS pharmaceutical purchasing. They would argue we are very tight. I believe we spend less then Germany Italy and France on drugs thanks to the way our healthcare is organised. Whilst that's generally a good thing if we can spend a bit more maybe we'll see some more investment into pharma and we might get some much needed more advanced drugs into NHS
-
BBC News - US and UK agree zero tariffs deal on pharmaceuticals - BBC News https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn0k520v4xro Interesting. Increasing NHS spending on drugs and no tariffs. To be fair we do probably need to increase our spending on pharmaceuticals in the NHS

The left won't allow them to cut pip welfare and the right won't let them cut pension welfare unfortunately. I don't want coalitions all the time as they tend to be unsteady at the best of times but I really wish parties would work together more.
-
Yeah we are definitely a bit want our cake and eat it at the minute. We don't want any cuts but want services to improve but don't want taxes to rise. I do think that RR has been a bit dishonest playing up the need for tax rises when it seems it was largely to give ourselves more headroom. Which isn't a bad decision to be fair but she's done the classic Tory thing of play down finances and then magically find a bit more money to help them politically. I do think as always with this Labour government the media have overblown it compared to how they usually report this kind of thing. Who knew politicians would play political games

It's a good job that's not happening then eh. Only got 92.3% of the country left after all
