Not sure if this has been said before, but as your Whisk(e)y palate matures, look for the 3 C's: Cask strength (i.e. not already watered down and usually between 46 - 60% ABV, you can then add water too your own taste), no added Caramel (E150) colouring (E150 can affect the original flavour profile) and non-Chill filtered (chill filtering removes organic particles to ensure that the spirit does not cloud (scotch mist) if ice or water is added - again thought to affect the flavour profile.
