Not even remotely close. That's more of a consequence than a cause. It's a disorder in the brains rewards system, the gambling addict starts off as a person at the bookies having a couple of quid on the match, or taking part in an office sweepstake, just as the alcoholic starts as a couple of drinks on a Friday evening and the sex addict as just someone getting their rocks off. They're, as it turns out, predisposed to compulsive behaviour that has the potentially to be harmful (gambling, sex, drugs etc,) in that they get an increased sense of reward from these activities, encouraging them to try it again and again, and again, and it leads into a debilitating spiral.

Addiction is not the persons fault, it's a mental illness - starting off as normal behaviour but due to a epigenetic quirk becomes all consuming and destructive, which they have to fight, far harder than those not predisposed to addiction, to control. It's like saying that depression is a result of being moody and it's the persons fault for not smiling and cheering up, or that anorexia starts with being dietarily irresponsible, and they should just eat something.

One of the players at our poker school if he wins he puts the money in the charity box. He says it is not so much that he  is against gambling but he fears of being addicted if  he keeps it. Normal weeks 1st pays around a tenner. Not a great deal but a gambler would put that tenner on another bet. Next Monday it is the season final. First prize will be around  £50  which includes a £20 beer voucher from the Kings. Would be nice to win (again) but not bothered if I don't.

Never been to a casino. I  don't trust them. As in most things you do not get something for nothing. Each type of game has the odds in the house's favour. Poker is the only one whereyou can come out  on top as it is against other players not the bank. Even then if you  are a poor player the bank's rake can do you and the better players will fleece you. I would say I am a fair player. I know the rules and hand values but I am not good at reading other players or calculating odds which would do me no good in a casino. I would be the fish at the  table. Also you need a reasonable bankroll to start with and know when to quit or change tables.

Been to Vegas once, spent about $20 in the casinos on some of the cheap slot machines. Best thing about it was the drinks button you could press on the machine and get any drink you wanted completely free.
