It's also worth mentioning that the last two notable managerial sackings from the premier league were Van Gaal and Martinez. Both managers had their teams playing patient possession football with very little end product.

I think the title of the thread is wrong.

 

"Pointless" possession football is exactly that, pointless

 

But the successful teams who have played a possession based game have played possession with a purpose.
