Iphone battery dies when used outside

This happened on my 5s, anytime I'd take it out my pocket I'd be guaranteed to lose 20%+ if it was cold or it'd just turn off if battery was low anyway.

You are lucky since it happens when 20%, I need to guarantee my battery at least 80%

Simple. Get a new battery for it, watch a youtube video and then replace your battery. Its a little bit more tricky than changing a battery on most phones but that's what youtube is for  and I did it, and if i can do it, then 99% of the worlds adult population can.

Ever been somewhere seriously cold where a fully charged battery goes in about 10 seconds?

 

Was in Sweden a few years back and had to keep the camera battery wedged under a bollock to enable me to use it for a few seconds to get a picture of the northern lights
