2005 MLS Playoffs

Recommended Posts

While you're all settling into midseason on your side of the ocean, over here, we've reached the climax of our season.

MetroStars needed to win at Chivas USA today in the regular season finale in order to sneak into the fourth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot... they escaped from California with a 2-0 win that they pulled out of their asses. Chivas had SEVENTEEN (yes, 17) corners and Metro keeper Tony Meola (who was the United States national team keeper... in the 1990 and '94 World Cups!) played like a brick wall and stopped all 12 shots.

After an embarassing home loss to rivals DC United with three games to go, Metro fired their manager, Bob Bradley and the few of us who still follow this cursèd team gave up on the season. But under interim (err... "caretaker") manager Mo Johnston (please, no "Judas" comments), they took seven points in their last three games and grabbed the back door to the playoffs. And who scored Metro's first goal? Michael Bradley, Bob Bradley's son.

Yes, there is plenty of drama in MLS! ;) But most people couldn't care less, so nobody knows. It would be a shame if Metro was to get knocked right out in the first round by New England after their crazy revival but they are underdogs and that is the likely outcome.

The playoffs start next weekend

I follow many American sports but not MLS really. It's interesting to see that New England are 1st seeds. New England certainly is a great place for sporting success, what with the Boston Red Sox being the current world champions (well until next week or so), New England Patriots winning the last 2 superbowls and the Boston Celtics and Bruins having pretty good teams too.
