Video gamers competing at major PUBG tournament at Leicester's Haymarket Theatre

Recommended Posts

Top video gamers are going controller-to-controller at a major e-sports event in Leicester over the next few days.

European qualifiers for the PUBG Global Invitational are taking place at the Haymarket Theatre from today until Sunday.

Teams will compete for a split of $100,000, around £75,000, and a coveted place at the main event in Berlin next month, where groups will face off for a share of a $2million, approximately £1.5million, prize pool.

Fifteen rounds will take place across three days.

At the end of this, three teams will have earned their place in the finals.

PUBG stands for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which is a multiplayer ‘battle royale’ style video game.

Characters are parachuted onto an island and must search for resources to try survive the longest.

ESL UK, based in Leicester, is hosting the e-sports event.

“We’re honoured to present the first official PGI european qualifiers in the UK,” said James Dean, managing director of ESL UK.

“PGI is an absolute phenomenon and we are excited to execute an ambitious 80-player stage setup that befits the scale of the game.”

A similarly prestigious e-sports tournament took place in Leicester in May, with League of Legends players battling it out on the screens.

The winner of the tournament will be the player who crashes last, or the one who doesn't get half-stuck in a rock/building.

I feel like you shouldn't be able to have a tournament of a game that still isn't technically "finished".
