Macca4lcfc Posted 9 September 2004 Posted 9 September 2004 did you see that all the england players have refused to do any post match interviews because of there treatment by the press after the austria game?
kerryh Posted 9 September 2004 Posted 9 September 2004 You can't really blame them. The press are always gunning for them. I think there solidarity should be commended!
shelly Posted 9 September 2004 Posted 9 September 2004 But they played rubbish against Austria! They love the attention when things are going ok but go in a paddy when people have the nerve to slate them, and this time they deserved it.They did something similar over the Ferdinand thing didn't they?I don't think they should be allowed to refuse to talk to the press when they are repesenting their country, good or bad they have to face everyone sooner or later.

They love the attention when it suits them.
DesertFox Posted 9 September 2004 Posted 9 September 2004 I think it's about time both the players and the press grew up and stopped behaving like a bunch of spoilt babies!!! AAAAARRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!! I'm not sure I give a rat's ass what any of them say, anyway. Bunch of illiterate halfwits... and as for the players...

Bunch of illiterate halfwits... and as for the players... 17908 I agree totally with the players - the press is a disgrace in this country - in America do you see the papers trying to get their national heroes in to trouble - in the usa and other countries when such things as drug scandals happen they support the people - over here it is shocking - Beckham for instance is a complete god and then has a few bad games and they are slating him - we are supposed to be suppporting our players. Same with rooney he "can do no wrong" and the the brothel thing comes up and they have no business getting involved and make it alot worse than it is - same goes for sven and other people - why embarass people when we should be supporting them
Stuliasz Posted 9 September 2004 Posted 9 September 2004 The press are half the reason why the England team doesn't perform well, as soon as we go out of a tournament, the manager HAS to go in their eyes and thereby starts an intensive media campaign to get whoever it is, however good his record is, out. The lack of a permanent manager is what has hampered England's progress. Given time, Sven will produce the goods and now I believe the England team is getting stronger. Four points from two potentially banana skin away games is not bad, and we are joint top of the group. There is no crisis. We will qualify for the world cup.
Guest Posted 9 September 2004 Posted 9 September 2004 Right. These players are paid more in one week, than most of us will see in a year. They are paid this to play football. They put themselves in the public domain, whether it is attention for their ability on the pitch, or for going to all the best parties off it. These men are role models. Football at all levels is trying to be more communityminded, and is it too much to ask for the players to respect their employers wishes? What kind of example are they setting when they start behaving like spoilt toddlers? Alright, so the press gave them a bit of stick because they didn't play well. GET ON WITH IT GUYS!!! Has it not occurred to them that any criticism might be justified, before the toys are thrown from out of the prams? They're quick enough to lap up the praise when it comes their way, so they have to expect to take the criticism when it comes. As for their personal lives, some players are more than happy to use the media when it suits them, so the press have every right to use the players for their benefit! It's alright Rooney bemoaning the tabloids after his exploits, but he wasn't moaning when he wanted them to initiate his girlfriend's career, did he? As for Beckham, don't even get me started........

Surely they have enough intelligence and advice to come up with a better, more foucssed response. They could turn up for the interviews and only answer football questions. They could publically denounce the offending media, I'm sure for example the Express would love to publish Beckham denouncing the Mirror. I'm sure some of them or their professional colleagues receive payments from these same newspapers for columns, they could respond in them. Come on there are lots of different ways they could have addressed this other than this childish I'm not talking to you rubbish.

I doubt it.
Macca4lcfc Posted 10 September 2004 Author Posted 10 September 2004 I agree with most things that have been said, to a degree. You could say that players are glad to lap up all the praise in the press when they have done well, but as soon as things go wrong they say im not talking to you. But you could also say that the press all want an interview from a big name player until he goes crap, then suddenly they are not interested in an interview that player. If the players do not want to talk, they dont have to, the same as if the tabloid doesnt want to interview a player they dont have to. And personally I didnt think the performance in austria was bad at all, so I think the press were out of order with alot of the criticism, but the sack sven issue, the talk about beckham should be dropped, and certain other things, i do agree with.
shelly Posted 10 September 2004 Posted 10 September 2004 But they could've said a short statement about the personal abuse being out of order first and then concentrated on answering questions about the game. For Defoe especially,it must've been hard for him NOT to talk to the press about scoring his first goal for England etc.I think there's a couple of players who certainly tell the others what to do- Gary Neville is one.

As for Beckham, don't even get me started........ 17925 Don't know whether I agree with that. Fair enough they receive alot of money, but that's not their fault. There is alot of jealousy in this country regarding footballers and it mainly comes from the media who are jealous because they think they are the dogs bollocks and are bitter because they don't receive the same sort of money that footballers do. It's not the footballers fault they earn this ridiculous amount of money, but considering football is one of the most powerful money making goldmines in this country it is inevitable that the people who are mainly responsible for accumolating so much money in football are going to be paid a shit load of money. The media pick up on this and because they know football is such a vastly followed sport and the money that is pumped in to it is by the fans and the public of this country they think if they can make some two bit story up about the countries heroes it will rake some money in for themselves to try and make them feel better and get one over on their enemy. It doesn't just happen in football it happens in all kinds of things that are in the public eye. The press are happy to brown nose a famous person, but they are like fliesround a turd when they can cash in on a fabricated story that will potentially ruin a famous figure. I couldn't give a shit about the media, I am as guilty as most for reading alot of the crap they write but it's just mind games between famous and the media. They should both grow up, but worse things happen in life and if this has pissed the media off then I am all for it. The way they go about things in this country is awful, but I suppose if you give these celebrities enough rope they will hang theirselves and that's what is happening. We all say we'd speak to the media all the time if we were paid that amount of money, but if we actually ever got in to the position they were in i'm sure we might not be as keen. I will never forgive the media after the La Manga business, alot of the shocking stories came from women journalists aswell who are obviously increasingly jealous of footballers and their vast wealth. Pathetic.
Ash Posted 10 September 2004 Posted 10 September 2004 The FA arent very happy with the players for doing it .......
