Footballs different these days... I don’t think the stats tells true story.

attackers had to essentially avoid assault to score back in the day and the great teams all had their fair share of average players... it was a more even financial landscape. Even looking at clubs like Man U in the 90s they still carried a fair few pretty average players and still absolutely bossed it.

Salah, Messi, Ronaldo all absolutely incredible but I do wonder if they would have been quite so amazing if they had to cope with what maradonna used to get thrown at him.

Anyway, great article, nice recognition.

Linker, Lynex and Smith. 50 goals a season. Fantastic quality and exciting to watch.

Unbelievable considering we did not with anything.

While in the same era, Banksy and Peake in mf were no strangers to the onion bag, often 20 - 30 yard screamers.

A pity that English was around at the time instead of Melrose

Only surpassed by Vardy and Mahrez as the best and most exciting forward line I have seen as a fan

Dreadful, dreadful deal, particularly since it involved Cov. Mercifully, he didn't make that many appearances.

Deane & Dickov scored a few didn't they...?

Dickov scored 20 (or more, not sure, but at least 20) in 02/03 and played alongside Deane all season. Deane must have got about 15 too.

Following season Dickov got about 14 but Deane got sold early on if I recall. Don't think Deane scored that season before leaving.

I'd say together they probably got as many as Howard/Fryatt?

Would be interesting to see our top 5 or tp 10 goalscoring partneships though.

You could go back and forward to think of a missing link for a few of our teams down the years. We never really came close to honours with that team but if we had a Kante or Tielemans in midfield then we would have, I'm sure.

I loved those two but while they were good for us and gave us some super moments they never quite had enough to make the top level, unlike the front two. Even Lynex was good but not great. He excelled and lived the dream with us and I'd say more of a cult hero. It was frustrating at the time because we dared to believe. Ultimately we fell just short in the all round quality and swagger needed to make the step that the O'Neill teams and those of the last 6-7 years managed.
