In honour of a certain trial defendant's poetic efforts being the subject of media reports, and also because this Tweet made me lol :

I suggest we have a thread of City / football-based poetry.

To Nobby

We remember you Nolberto

When you took a free kick, it was like a concerto

And with you in our team we could never get hurto

Apart from that night in Cardiff, when,to be fair, you played out of your shirto.

Poetry? Yep, more please.

There used to be a wonderful newspaper called Athletic News, which was as respected then as L'Equipe in France is now (or La Gazzetta Dello Sport in Italy).

Poetry used to be a an important part of its coverage, and a long verse about the weekend's football results was often the first story on page 1 of the paper - look at the left hand column here:

That poem was all about the results of Saturday January 12th 1899, when there were only three away wins in the League, the biggest being Leicester Fosse's amazing 6-1 win at Luton. It's written by 'W.E.', who appears to have been a Leicester fan, but hasn't had much chance to crow about his favourite team (it would be another decade before we climbed out of Division Two):

Which would you prefer? This, or the usual cliche filled guff we get these days?

There are literary references, in the article you quoted.

The erudition to me seems bloated.

By the end I felt fatigue.

But then saw mention of a "PREMIER LEAGUE".
