There are plenty of people approving of the person who incited it.

I think this is probably the most concerning aspect, how many people (turns out a lot of US citizens) are quite happy to normalise who he is, what he says, and what he stands for.

Do we ever sacrifice our principles for desired outcomes?
I doubt he’ll offer anything other than what most expect from him but say we get to the end of year 4 and we have a realistic peace scenario in the mid east and the ukraine/russia war having found an acceptable settlement.  Is there a level of injustice, day to day, in the states (and possibly elsewhere) that would be worth it?

I'm wondering if many of those who have voted for him are simply closing their eyes to what he actually is because they believe he’ll do stuff they think will improve their lives and others too ???   It’s not as stark as those on the left who voted for chirac in France a few years ago when the choice was him or le Penn but in many people’s minds perhaps it was a bit like that.

Persuading people that short-term sacrifices are necessary to long-term survival (eg, with regards to reducing carbon emissions) is very difficult and a massive challenge. But it's more important than ever.

Exactly.

So it might be nice to have a little more help on that score.

I wonder whether it would help if there was a clearer plan and timeline for it. I know you’ll say there is one but it always feels very distant.

I think the timelines and plans are pretty clear as they are, but evidently not clear enough for enough people.

I know that makes the issue abstract and that's a problem, but a bigger problem would be appearing to lie about it by giving details later found to be false.

Not sure what the best way to proceed is tbh, but the clock is ticking and the future cost keeps going up.

Such a thing must depend on the situation, the outcomes, and the costs, I think.

In this case, I don't see how the positive outweighs the negative.
