Just a note for those that may be interested... The Granny starts in approx 3 hours.

Well worth watching for the amazing spectacle that it is even if you arent sure of the rules.

Simple rules...

Four quarters are played, (time is added on for when the ball is out of play), quarters usually last around 25 mins each

Goal  = ( Ball kicked between the big posts) = 6 points

Behind = (ball travels between any of the posts) = 1 point

The points are added together to make a final total...a team who scores less goals can still win
(eg Team A scores 2 goals and 3 behinds = 15points vs Team B scores 1 goal and 10 behinds = 16 points)

Mark (Free kick) = Ball is kicked and caught without touching the ground or another player

Cannot carry the ball more than 10 metres without it being passed or touching (bouncing) the ground

Tackles must be between shoulders and hips

If tackled you must dispose of the ball or a free kick is awarded to tackler

You can only pass by kicking or by a handpass (which invloves punching the ball from your hand) you can pass forwards, backwards or sideways.

Each team has 18 players on the ground at any time... substitutions can be made while the game isin progress and  players can come off or go on as often as the coach thinks required.

There are no yellow or red cards.. you cannot be sent off even if you assault your opponent.

The AFL (Australian Football league) grew from a local competition based in one stae (Victoria) they sent teams to other states, so todays finalists...the "Sydney Swans" were originally South Melbourne FC... and the "Brisbane Lions" were originally Fitzroy FC both clubs that were broke and "sold" to interstate corporations in the 80s/90s to expand the competion nationally.

What's to stop a team absolutely battering the other team's best player?
