Rincewind Posted 8 February 2006 Posted 8 February 2006 I may have asked before but not sure of the answers I got. If I got a laptop how do I connect it to my home PC without using another persons telephone line or PC connection. In my job I would not be allowed to do this. for some reason they would class it as theft. Not every place I go to has a tel line or PC connection anyway. I just need to connect it to a power point and use my home PC. Another question how expensive is it to do this. Obviously if I just use it to visit Foxtalk it may not be worth it. But I do 12 hour shifts so a little browsing would pass the time combined with some internet poker. I would be grateful for any help or even a link to a good place where I can get advice re this. I'm not in a rush because my works dried up with not many shifts available but it would be something to think about when bored and a thread for others to reply to when things are quiet on here.

Wireless Router for PC and then Wirelass LAN card for your laptop.
Dr The Singh Posted 9 February 2006 Posted 9 February 2006 Wireless Router for PC and then Wirelass LAN card for your laptop. that would work, also you could just plug the network cables into the router, saves money of a wireless card. Remember to setup print and file sharing and make sure both machines are on the same workgroup. If you have XP, click 'start' and then 'help and support', and then search for print and file sharing, workgroup settings, you will get guidlines o how to do it. The easiest option if you have USB ports, is to use a memory card stick, you can buy form www.Novatech.co.uk from aslittle as £15. Save your Powerpoint slide onto the stick and then plug into PC\laptop and transfer!! This option is dependant on your Operating system and security settings!!
Rincewind Posted 9 February 2006 Author Posted 9 February 2006 Thanks. I'll get some-one in to do it at the time. Think I'm running out of USB points. I bought a MP3 and had hell of a job connecting it. It wouldn't work with the USB at the front and I've had to change other things around. It works fine at the back but just means I have to move me desk every time I want to charge or use my MP3. Might be easier enough to add all that stuff but I know somebody who has done all my upgrades and checked the PC when it needed it. He may be able to supply the lap top as well. I shall have to give it some thought and weigh up the pro's and cons.
Chimp Posted 9 February 2006 Posted 9 February 2006 Potentially the easiest solution (not necessarily the cheapest though) would be to get a Wireless Modem Router which plugs straight into your broadband connection. The Router would then allow wireless connections from your PC and your laptop. Most laptops have built in wireless cards nowadays so all you'd have to buy extra would be a wireless card (USB or otherwise) for your PC.
The People's Hero Posted 11 February 2006 Posted 11 February 2006 Or just continue to run your pc on a 'wired' connection...
D4 Posted 11 February 2006 Posted 11 February 2006 yea. standard wireless network. its the norm now. shud have no probs
