Did anyone on here go today?

Recommended Posts

We have a couple of big problems.

1) We look frail when defending set-pieces.

2) We don't look dangerous when we win set-pieces.

It's been apparent for quite some time now, even going back to MA's days here.

I thought we'd got better at defending set pieces recently but there are some underlying issues there, it seems alot of teams have at the minute aswell.

We aren't dangerous from set pieces because we haven't got a decent corner taker, we only have 4 decent players with aerial presence aswell (Stearman, Nissa, McCarthy/Gerrbrand, Kisnorbo) that play regularly.

One of the targets in the summer is to get a set piece specialist, Sheehan can take a good free-kick and corner but whether he'll be playing regularly next season is debatable. Darren Currie at Ipswich has shown how valuable it is to have someone of this nature, Koumas aswell. We've been exposed by both of these players this season.

We were horrible on Saturday. For the main part, I thought Henderson looked very hesitant although he made one or two cracking saves. The defence didn't have much to cope with in my opinion. Haynes and McDonald were all pace and not much else and Fuller didn't look dangerous at all. I can't believe we let a team as poor as Ipswich score twice. We might as well have been playing a brilliant team who scored two fantastic goals as a useless-looking side who managed to nick two from set-pieces. I can't believe how bad the defending was for the goals, especially the second. We're crying out for a goalkeeper that commands even his six-yard box let alone any further out than that.

The worst thing though was the midfield. Tiatto was absolutely horrific. He gave away needless fouls, couldn't pass the ball ten yards without giving it to an opposition player and generally looked off the pace by quite some distance. Maybury was poor as well, although he looked like creating something once or twice. Hughes barely got a kick and looks nothing like the player we saw at the end of last season. So much for Levein's claim that he would be "magnificent" for us this year. Hume had a very poor game and Fryatt was feeding off scraps. Not sure about Gudjonsson, he had a poor game but was still our most effective player in midfield by a long way. All in all, a horrible performance.

By the way, £25 plus booking fee for the worst legroom I've ever experienced, a total lack of atmosphere, one of the worst games I've ever seen between two absolutely dire football teams. I might as well have made out a cheque to Ipswich Town FC Debt Reduction and be done with it. And that's before you count travelling expenses, food and drink.

90 minutes a week playing time leaves a lot of time to practice essential techniques like taking a friggin' corner without hitting the first defender or sending it sailing harmlessly into the arms of the keeper. However leave that aside. This is exactly what we have to get sorted out- especially in this division. Slightly more guile is required in the prem. Everytime we get a corner or free kick you know that nothing will come of it ; if the oppo get a corner or a free kick in our half I expect them to score

Remember Muzzy when we got promoted - How many goals did we get from his corners and freekicks - IMO one of the greatest reasons we got promotion that year - Oh and having some big players to actually head it!!!!

The first statement is very true. 9 times out of 10, you know where the ball is going to end up before anyone has taken the corner!!

Disagree with the aerial threat. Neither Gerrbrand nor Johannson look comfortable with the ball in the air. I thought we missed Paddy, to be fair.

I think the last three games underline just how small our squad really is, and that it doesn't take much for us to look less than ordinary. Having said that, we should never blame any defeat on the loss of 1 or 2 players.
