Chairman of the Bored Posted 26 May 2006 Posted 26 May 2006 Rivetting stuff. Ferguson is a historian with a nice line in banter, put me downs and crystal clear analysis. Here's his: World War 3 will follow as a result of internicene warfare between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in the Middle East. This will happen when the USA and the UK pull out of Iraq, the Saudi Royal family are deposed and Iran decides to re-open conflict with Iraq. The West will move in to protect the oil and......bang. World War 3. It's a chilling scenario and goes against the 90s idea of the next WW being about the clash of civilisations (The West versus the Muslim world). He has a book out called World War: The Descent of the West and I think there's a TV documentary upcoming. Any takers?

Head Honcho Posted 26 May 2006 Posted 26 May 2006 i heard him, i also heard the chap a few days ago who said iraq isn't as bad as the media makes out. misery makes money With over 50 IED's being detonated daily I'd say that's pretty bad wouldn't you? 300 US soldiers killed last year alone by roadside bombs!
stez Posted 26 May 2006 Posted 26 May 2006 With over 50 IED's being detonated daily I'd say that's pretty bad wouldn't you? 300 US soldiers killed last year alone by roadside bombs! there are more people killed on britains roads every year. i didn't say it wasn't bad, but i, and i presume you, have never been to iraq, so i can't speak with any first hand authority

The press have fallen into the classic divide and conquer trap set by the dissidents 99% of everyday Iraqi's support our troops and the reason for them being worse off now then before is because the dissidents are destroying the infrastructure.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 26 May 2006 Author Posted 26 May 2006 Niall Ferguson is not your standard hack. He takes a very objective standpoint and views the present through a very sharp historical perspective. His view is post-USA/UK withdrawal (which is inevitable). It's also based on an analysis of global trends. More Muslims are killed by Muslims worldwide annually than by any army from the West. Some one needs to say these things. Maybe the poliarticians will one day sit up and not make decisions based on short term policy objectives.

Head Honcho Posted 26 May 2006 Posted 26 May 2006 I'm far from convinced that the Middle East will be the catalyst for WW3 but I do believe that civil war in Iraq is inevitable.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 26 May 2006 Author Posted 26 May 2006 UPDATE - The first episode of Prof. Ferguson's new documentary, War of the World, will air on June 19th, at 8pm, on Channel 4 (UK). From the man's own website: http://www.niallferguson.org/
Lemon Harpic Posted 26 May 2006 Posted 26 May 2006 I agree with you that misery makes money and if the press concentrated more on the good things our troops are doing out there then the public support back home may be more favourable! Yeah. Why do they always have to concentrate on the negative things like the killing, blowing up of schools, hospitals and orphanages, and the torture and abuse? They never show you the positive side of the occupying forces, and all the good deeds they do that make up for all the killing, blowing up of schools, hospitals and orphanages, and the torture and abuse.
