Molson Canadian Posted 27 June 2006 Posted 27 June 2006 From CNN http://edition.cnn.com/2006/SPORT/football...otto/index.html ROME, Italy -- Juventus's former Italian international Gianluca Pessotto, now the Turin side's team manager, was in a serious condition on Tuesday after falling from a window at the club's headquarters. The former defender suffered multiple fractures and internal bleeding but his life was not in danger, a spokesman said. The hospital released a statement later Tuesday saying that Pessotto had undergone surgery to clear a blood clot. He had also been hemorrhaging near the stomach after tearing an artery. Pessotto was "stable, given the gravity of the situation," the statement said. Pessotto was found clutching a rosary, having fallen some 15 meters from a dormer window in the roof of the building. Police sources said that it was unclear what had happened. "In all probability it was a voluntary move by Pessotto,"an investigative source, who asked not be identified, told Reuters. A Turin hospital official, speaking on Sky Italia TV, said police were investigating a suicide attempt. Italian news agency ANSA said that Pessotto was alone in his office at the time. He helped Juventus to win six Serie A titles and the 1996 Champions League. The club has recently been implicated in a massive match-fixing scandal in Italy but Pessotto, who took up the post of team manager at the end of last season after 11 years with the team, is not among those facing charges at a sports tribunal due to start on Thursday. The 22-times capped Pessotto had visited Italy's World Cup team after their 2-0 win over the Czech Republic in Hamburg last Thursday. Two players from the Italian squad, Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluca Zambrotta, together with assistant coach Ciro Ferrara flew from Germany to Turin on Tuesday to visit Pessotto in the hospital. They were given permission by Italy coach Marcello Lippi and arranged a private jet to take them to Italy and back by Tuesday night. Italy face Ukraine in the World Cup quarterfinals on Friday. Somber mood Italy's mood went from jubilant to somber as players and staff heard the news about Pessotto. Italy had opened their training base to fans to celebrate Monday's last-minute 1-0 win over Australia in the second round and captain Fabio Cannavaro was laughing and joking during a news conference until he heard the news. Cannavaro's demeanor changed instantly and he excused himself and walked out. He later told ANSA: "I'm devastated. Pessotto was the nicest guy in the world." Cannnavaro, Del Piero, Zambrotta, Gianluigi Buffon and Mauro Camoranesi play for Juventus. Ferrara, a former Juventus and Italy defender, retired last year. "He was here with us the other day," Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi said. "He's a friend. Many of us have played with him on the national team. We hope he recovers soon, with no damage."

Daggers Posted 27 June 2006 Posted 27 June 2006 Wow, this Juve situation is getting really shady. Getting?
Ultra Posted 27 June 2006 Posted 27 June 2006 The club must be really worried about what the investigation is likely to uncover.

Thracian Posted 28 June 2006 Posted 28 June 2006 you mean Gods Banker What an incredible story that is. Largely explain by the book "In God's Name" and great material for a film.

Gamesmaster Posted 29 June 2006 Posted 29 June 2006 With juve in its darkest days, the last thing they needed was former player, now manager attempting suicide. He must've been in a terrible state. http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=6&am...51413380911F432 Shankly once said "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that"
